Grammar Girl spoke about some hospital signs, which were grammatically incorrect. They used singular subjects and plural verbs. Instead they should have paired singular subjects and verbs together, as well as plural subjects and verbs. She also gave a suggestion on how to aviod subject-verb disagreement. In order to avoid it in ones own work circle sibject and verbs in the paper and check to make sure that they agree.
For example, one would not say "Karen and Victor is at the movies for the evening", but "Karen and Victor are at the movies.” Also, one would not say, "Discipline and strength is crucial in the game of softball", but instead "Discipline and strength are crucial in the game of softball", because they are plural subjects and they should be paired with the plural verb "are".
Grammar Girl spoke of how there were some grammar errors on some hospital signs. The hospital signs were grammatically wrong written. Apparently, these signs were not paired off right. A singular subject agrees with a singular verb and a plural subject always agrees with a plural verb. The signs that she had read were singular subjects paired with plural verbs which was wrong. She spoke of a tedious , but easy way to avoid subject verb disagreement. She said in order to avoid this error its good if you circle the subject and the verbs in your work. This would help to check if your subject and verbs are well paired with each other. She also spoke , to be careful with compound subjects.
As an example, it is wrong written when you pair a singular subject with a plural verb such as “ Carlos and Jennifer is in the car waiting for their friend.” This phrase is grammatically wrong it should be “ Carlos and Jennifer are in the car waiting for their friend” this is because a plural subject agrees with an plural verb. Another example would be “Andrew and Kayla, his friend ,are escaping from the crowd that kept them from returning home.” This sentence is paired correctly because Andrew and Kayla are plural subjects and escaping is the plural verb which makes it correct.

This week Grammar Girl looks into the subject of subject-verb agreement through the lens of medicine. She describes
subject-verb DISagreement with funny medicine-based words like "disagreement-itis" and
"mistake-ectomy." You can tell that she uses a funny and mocking tone because of her example of "Doctor Doofus" and "Nurse Nincompoop."
Her tone as well as her choice of connecting grammar with medicine help grab the reader/listener's attention (well at least it grabbed mine).
This IS an example of correct subject-verb agreement.
Because "This" is singular replacing the words "this sentence," the correct form of the verb "to be" is... IS.
Each of them IS going to respond to my quote.
Even though this example sounds weird, it is actually grammatically correct. The way you can tell is by changing the phrase "Each of them" with "Each student". Means the same thing right? Well now the sentence reads:
Each student IS going to respond to my quote.
This way definitely sounds better than the first.
Karina...
Your second example is correct. The only thing is the verb of the sentence "Andrew and Kayla, his friend, are escaping from the crowd"
is "are" not "escaping."
In this weeks grammar girl, the subject is subject-verb agreement. She uses two examples to describe the problem. One was a sign that read "The use of cell phones and pagers are prohibited.” This was incorrect since the subject is "the use of" which is singular, which means the verb should be "is" not "are".
One example that uses subject-verb agreement correctly is: The boy is very tired after practice.
This example shows subject-verb agreement being used improperly: Eagerly, Tom and George is headed to the game.
Reasonable Rama,
From reading your post, it shows that you definitely have an understanding of this weeks Grammar Girl. Your second example put it on terms that most people can understand.
Khadeem Thomas
Scalderon.....
I definitely agree with what you wrote. And i also agree with your examples beacuse you did what grammer girl suggested by pairing the plural subjects with plural verbs, and the singular subjects.
Grammar Girl's "Subject-Verb Agreement" podcast was all about having your singular(and plural) subjects and verbs in agreement with each other. As a couple of examples, she used a grammatically incorrect hospital sign, and a phone call to her doctor's office. She went into detail about how the subjects should agree with their verbs, whether singular or plural.
"Chuy and Oscar is skating down that hill on their long boards." That sentence is incorrect because Chuy and Oscar are two subjects, therefore it should not be "is skating" it should be "are skating."
Another example could be "The Marine are taking over the headquarter." The correct use should be "The Marine is taking over the headquarter."
My reply goes to Khadeem. You obviously know how to use correct subject-verb agreement as well as Rama. Both of your examples show the proper use of what to and what not to do in subject-verb agreement.
Daniel Rodriguez P.2
The main idea of this podcast is to make sure your subjects and verbs agree with each other. Here grammar girl caught a mistake on a hospital sign and immediately corrected it in her mind. She says the singular subjects MUST be with their singular verbs. Same goes for plural subjects and verbs.
An example of this subject-verb agreement is, "Karla and Roger are heading towards me." Another example would be, "My strength to continue fighting is wearing out."
Francisco B.
Excellent post Daniel i love the example you provide as well as all the other posts. Very informative indeed thanks a lot guys good job. I like the example of the Marine taking over the Headquarters. Keeping it simple and understandable.
Grammar Girl this week spoke of Suject-Verb Agreements. She used her visit to the hospital to get her point across to the readers. In her visit she noticed how some hospital signs used singular subjects with plural verbs and vise versa, which then lead up to her topic. Her point was to make sure that everyone knew how to use singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs. Many find that using singular subjects with plural verbs are correct, but in reality, they are wrong.
One example which shows Subject-Verb Agreement is : "Luisa and her friends ARE going to the movies this week." It is correct because the subjects in the sentence are Luis and her friends. Them making the subject plural, the verb should also be plural.
One example of an Incorrect Subject-Verb Agreement is : "Mike and his father is eating at the new restaurant down thw block." This is incorrect because the subjects of this sentence are Mike and his father. Them making the subject plural the verb should not be thhe singular word "is", but it should be changed to its plural form "are" making the sentence : "Mike and his father are eating at the new restaurant down thw block."
Khadeem,
From what your summary and examples look like it shows that you really understood the point that Grammar Girl was trying to make. You used it in correct form and showed the incorrect form as well. Good Job.
Grammar Girl dicussed about how to properly use subject-verb agreement. She explained a simple grammar rule."A singular subject agrees with a singular verb and a plural subject agrees with a plural verb." She pointed out that everyone makes this simple mistake once in a while, even professional writers...and that's ok.
She advises people to check their work at least once before they turn it in or publish it.
My first example is:
"Mayra is a great singer that will be performing in the talent show."
The subject of the sentence is Mayra, which is singular.
My second example is:
"Melissa and Ruben are going to the movies for their first date."
In this sentence the subject is Melissa and Ruben. There for you need a plural verd to match the subject. You can't use is because it would only work for one of them, but that's not the case here you have two people which is plural.
-Luis M.
Fransisco...
The way you summarized the podcast was really good. And your 2 examples really wrap up and support your entry. I understand exactly what you mean and I think its helpful to know.
Grammar Girl makes a great point when speaking about "Subject- Verb Agreement." Agreement mistakes often occur when one pairs singular subjects with plural verbs and vice versa. For example, one should avoid saying, " Those pages is out of order."The singular verb, is, does not agree with the plural subject, pages. It is important to watch out for such mistakes because subject- verb
disagreements " kills your
credibilty."The correct use of grammar would lead to, "Those pages are out of order. "
Grammar Girl gives tips on how to fix subject- verb disagreements. One must identify the subject and the verb of a sentence. Then, simply see if the two match or agree. Grammar Girl uses the example, " The use of cell phones and pagers are prohibited," to illustrate a common problem in seeing if subjects and verbs agree. According to Grammar Girl, one must watch out for the prepositional phrases that cause subject- verb dissagreement. In this example, "of cell phones and pagers," is the prepostional
phrase. "Cell phones and
pagers," is the clue that shows the verb should be plural, not singular.
I found Grammar Girl's podcast very informative and full of good advice about proper
English.
Thanks GG,
Sarah
Grammar Girl was talking about how in the hospital most signs aren't as proper as they should be. Each sign that she saw in the hospital was mistakenly written wrong. Every singular subject was combined with a plural subject which made evrything not make sense. I would have to agree with Grammar Girl because she is pointing out the mistakes on the signs and if it were to us walking around places with signs having grammar mistakes, we wouldn't of noticed them.
For example: They is not doing their homework. The correct and proper way to say is, They are not doing their homework.
Another example is: Mario and Andrew is comming over to see the boxing match. the correct way is Mario and Andrew are comming over to see the boxing match.
-Roberto Cabezas Per.2
Great Gilly, I like how you told of how Grammar Girl's visit to the hospital lead to her noticing that many signs are not written in proper English; in other words, subject- verb agreements. Your examples were also very well thought out and easy to understand.
Sarah A.
Great Gilly...
I like that fact that you stated how each of your examples of subject verb are incorrect and can be fixed by rearrenging and adding words to make it fit and make sense!
Grammar Girl explained how to properly use the subject-verb agreement. She brought up one rule about how singular subjects pairs up with singular verbs, and a plural subject with a plural verb. She also mentioned to circle the subject and underline the verb and check to see if they match to help you understand the subject-verb agreement.
Ex. It is correct saying "Marcos and Christine are attending the high school football game together."
-The plural subjects are "Marcos and Christine", and the plural verb that goes with it is "are attending"
Ex. Another one is "Todd and Jenny are walking along the beach.'
-The plural subjects are "Todd and Jenny", and the plural verb is "are walking".
I liked how Sarah summarized today's podcast and continued to list additional information about the subject-verb agreement.
-CARLOS H. P.2
In todays Grammar Girl, she spoke to us about Subject-Verb Agreement. She pointed out how little word can change our sentence to be incorrect. However she also taught us simple ways to catch the simple mistakes. Grammar girl talked about the Hospital signs, and how they show off signs with grammatically incorrect sentences.
For Example, if i were to say "Sydney and Shaq is playing in the sand box", you should know that the sentence is correct. If you were to change "Sydney and Shaq" into "They" then the correct verb to use would not be IS, it'll be ARE. "Sydney and Shaq ARE playing in the sandbox together".
Khadeem
From the looks of your post, you completely understand Subject-Verb Agreement. Your examples made lots of sense to me, if I was ever having problems with this I can ensure your that there cleared up now.
In Grammar Girl’s podcast, she gives us tips on how to use subject-verb agreement appropriately. She notices a grammatical error on a hospital sign and inside her doctor’s office. She then continues on about how the subject and verb must agree with one another. When using a singular subject one must make sure to use a singular verb or if using a plural subject one must use a plural verb.
“Mike and Ike is going to perform at the school’s talent show next month.” In this sentence, the singular verb does not agree with Mike and Ike because they are plural. The correct way to write the sentence would be, “Mike and Ike are going to perform at the school’s talent show next month.”
“The children in the playground is going to be very tired by the end of the day.” In this other sentence, the subject does not agree with the singular verb because it is plural. The correct way to write the sentence would be, “The children in the playground are going to be very tired by the end of the day.”
- Mary Garcia, Per2
Great Gilly, your summary and examples show that you understand the main point of this week's topic on "Subject-verb Agreement." Your correct examples using the plural subjects with their plural verbs are definitely in agreement.
Grammar Girl shows the importance of subject-verb agreement with examples of grammar errors that she experienced in the doctor's office and in her copy-editing career. She tells the readers that whenever the subject is plural, the verb form should also be plural. When the subject is singular, the verb form is singular as well. However, many people make these mistakes mostly when "stuff" like prepositional phrases or appositives are placed in between the subject and the verb.
One incorrect example would be: The student, eating during class, are hungry.
This sentence should be changed to "the student, eating during class, is hungry."
Another incorrect example is: Sleeping adequately and eating well is vital to one's health.
The correct sentence should say "sleeping adequately and eating well are vital to one's health."
-Raymond A.
Robert,
I can see that you got the point to Grammar Girl and the idea of how to use the subject-verb agreement. I also think your right about how many of us would not notice the grammatical errors on a hospital sign. Your examples are good as well. It shows that you get it.
- Mary ,per2
Gilly, I agree with the example that you wrote. The subject and verb did not correspond together in the first sentence because they were plural and singular, but then you corrected it in the second sentence by writing both as plural
-Stephanie Calderon
Grammar Girl starts with her horror of badly edited hospital signs. The signs use careless subject-verb agreement using a singular subject with a plural verb. She then explains the basic subject-verb agreement rule: a singular subject must go with a singular verb. However there are times when the subject is hard to identify. Grammar Girl uses the hospital sign as an example. "The use of cell phones and pagers are prohibited." In this, use is the subject which makes the verb is. To make sure proper subject-verb agreement is used, Grammar Girl suggests to mark the subject and the verb.
Ex. “All sixteen students is graduating.”
This is obviously bad subject-verb agreement. A plural subject with a singular verb?
“All sixteen students are graduating.”
Now that’s much better.
Ex. “Listening to music during class are against school rules.”
Again, bad subject-verb agreement. The singular subject needs to be with a singular verb.
“Listening to music during class is against school rules.”
-Sara L.
Grammar Girl talked about how many people make mistakes in wat they wrote or has written. For example, the signs in the hospital that were grammatically incorrect. She also talks about how phrases have singular subject that agree with a singular verb and plural subject always agree with plural verb. She also mentioned that singular subjects cant go with plural verbs because that a big mistake. In addition she said that in order to aviod subject verb disagreement, you can circle the subject and the verb in your work to make sure that they agree.
For example “The rolling gurney is about to crash into the unwary sign writer!” This is an example of subject verb agreement. An example of a grammar error is the sign at the hospital. It was a singular subject with a plural verb.
karina your really understood wat grammar girl talkd about. The reason im saying this is because you gave 2 great examples on subject verb agreement and disagreement. I wa not able to come up with one myself but thanks for helping me understand this grammar errors much better.
Subject-verb agreement was Grammar Girl's topic of discussion this week. In her podcast she stresses the importance of subject-verb agreement. Grammar girls places the lesson across with a very humorous take. Her point is drawn across through medical terms, which in part adds to the fun of her podcast. What really must be learned, although, is the title lesson. The podcast teaches to always pair your singular subject along with a singular verb. Grammar girl places the example,"The rolling gurney is about to crash into the unwary sign writer!.” She properly pairs the subject along with the singular verb, in this case being is. So obviously if singular belongs to singular when a plural subject is used a plural verb must be placed as well. Grammar Girls was very insightful yet comical, making English fun, ( Not that Ms. Allen doesn't do it too).
Examples:
* (wrong) The construction workers is going to take a break. (correct) The construction workers are going to take a break.
* (wrong) George are having the BLT. (correct) George is having the BLT.
Thanks Sara L. You showed a segment I must have over looked when listening to Grammar Girl. I did not hear her suggestion to circle and I identify the subject and the verb within a sentence. I normally just go with how it sounds. The advice is useful, although, since sentence can get tricky a times.
Michelle V.
When writing, it is essential to fixate your attention on the form of your sentence structure. Grammar girl brings attention to subject-verb agreement by stating that the subject, being singular or plural, pairs in the sentence structure with the same form of verb. Ex. singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs. When combining 2 subjects it is crucial to be aware of the usage of subject-verbs, for they follow the same rule as singular subjects. She also insists that proof reading your own paper is a good way to catch your own mistakes and fix them before commencing with the final touches.
An example of subject-verb agreement used correctly is "Karla is going to UC San Francisco next fall. Since Karla is a singular subject, you use "is".
An example of subject-verb agreement used incorrectly is "Loyalty and trust is a way to maintain a good friendship". In this case you need to use "are" because you are using plural subjects.
Karina, you explained well about grammar girl's own experience in subject-verb disagreement. Good way to summarize her podcast.
Lucy
I really like your summarization of Grammar Girl's podcast. It shows that you have a good grasp of subject-verb agreement. Your examples show "is" and "are" examples correctly.
-Sara L.
Basically this episode of grammar girl is talking about how singular and plural subjects are commonly mistaken. Words like "is" and "are", are sometimes used in the wrong way. Sometimes double checking an essay to make sure little mistakes like those come in handy.
Ex 1. "jaron and Ricardo is at the skatepark." , this sentence should actually be written , "Jaron and Ricardo are at the skatepark."
Ex 2. "Elvis and Eric is friends" this sentence is wrong because "is" should actually be "are" because it is plural.
Khadeem,
By reading your post I strongly believe that you understand the difference singular and plural . I liked your post because it kind of gave me some ideas for my post.
Grammar Girl talked about the subject-verb agreement. They talked about how to use a singular subject that agrees with a singular verb. Same with a plural subject, it has to agree with a plural verb. For example, the statement "They is helpful" is not the correct agreement. "They" is a plural subject, therefore you have to make sure it agrees with the correct verb, which would be "They are helpful." Another example, "I are going to the park." is a false statement. It should be "I am going to the park." because "I" is a singular subject that has to agree with a singular verb.
-Rocio Lopez
Karina, I really like with what you've done with the examples.
The plural subjects must agree with the plural verb.
Its amazing how much you can learn about using proper English language. People, including myself, don't notice when a friend or family member use improper English, but that has to change because the English language is something to be cherished, and not used unproperly. Grammar Girl talked about how singular subjects agree with singular verbs and how plural subjects agree with plural verbs. In the sentence"The rolling gurney is about to crash into the unwary sign writer", the singular subject "gurney" pairs up with its isngular verb, in this case "is". In the sentence, "Your patience and consideration is very much appreciated" is wrong because the subject is plural, therefore the verb should be "are". I learned that nothing is perfect, but we can still try to do our best to preserve the English language as flawless as possible.
Ex.1 The sentence "George and Nathan is going to the grocery store to get food supplies," incorrect because there is a plural subject "George and Nathan" and its supposed to be paired with the plural verb "is".
Ex.2 The sentence "Love and loyalty is the most important factors in a marriage," is incorrect because love and loyalty are the plural subjects, therefore the plural verb "are" should replace the singular verb "is".
Francisco, it was interesting how you pointed out that the hospitals had incorrect signs. It surprises to know that that a hospital would even have errors, but i guess there is. Good job on pointing that out!
Fernando Serrano
Grammar Girl was about subject verb agreement in the hospital. The hospital had grammar errors in the signs. Your verb should match your subject. She said to fix this you should circle the subject and verb. She had to just check your work.
For example of not to do it is "Jim and Tom is at the park with their fiends."
The right way is Bill and Bob when to the movies with their fiends.
Justin Orue
Karina
You know that you are talking about. Your example are great and show that you understand it.
I feel like Grammar Girl spoke the truth about this subject. Subjects must always agree with verbs. For instants " We was about to go to the movies." This is a very common mistake especially in today's teenage social world. The correct saying would be "we are about to go to the movies". Another important detail that she covered in the lesson is that sometime we forget to make a subject plural to match the verb.
ex1: "A group of skater comes to the park yesterday."
The correct phrase would be " A group of skaters came to the park yesterday."
ex2: The boy's bag are heavy
The example above should be " The boy's bag is heavy."
Carlos was right on the money about the singular verbs connecting with the singular subject. I feel as if more of today youth would have this same kind of insight, the slang culture would indeed decrease...
-Dominique Thomas
(Domostayspiffy)
hahaha its funny how my aim name is grammatically incorrect
Grammar Girl talks about the importance of subject-verbs agreements. She also gives various examples of local places that use the wrong subject verb agreements on their signs and thank you messages. In the end, she gives us different techniques to avoid making these grammatical mistakes.
EX.1. Some of the voters is still angry.
-'some' and 'voters' indicate that this sentence is plural, so 'is' should be 'are'.
(correct) Some of the voters are still angry.
EX.2. There are only one rule in this class...
-in this case 'only one' is obviously in singular meaning, 'are' should be 'is'.
(correct) There is only one rule in this class....
Great Gilly ...(?)
I thought your summary was very well writen, and easy to understand. Your examples were very good as well, because you had simple examples and helpfull explanations under each example.
-Michelle Couto
This Grammar Girl talks about the "Subject-Verb Agreement" It talked about how to use a singular subject that is able to agrees with the other singular verbs. Also Grammar Girl was telling us about some error that she made in a previous webcast. Some of the main points where that lots of people make mistakes every day. Finally Grammar Girl is telling us examples about the errors that we make and showing us.
In this episode Grammar Girl spoke about a two particular signs she encountered at a hospital that were grammatically incorrect. This week’s topic was based upon subject verb agreement in which a singular verb must agree and used correctly with a singular verb and a plural subject has to agree with a plural verb. In other words if a subject is singular, its verb must also be singular and if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural. Example#1
Ashley and Katrina is seeking for a good way to fundraise money for their cross country team.
This first example is grammatically incorrect due to the fact that
Ashley and Katrina are two subjects; therefore it should not be “is seeking” but should be “are seeking.”
Example #2
All the soccer girls is going to be tired right after the game because they gave their best in today’s game. In this sentence, the subject does not agree with the singular verb because it is plural. The correct way to write the sentence would be, “All the soccer girls are going to be tired right after the game because they gave their best in today’s game.”
Response to Rama's
In your summary I didn't seem to find how you explained what Grammar Girls point was. I did agree with your example but your summary just didn't seem to explain the subject-verb agreement.
Vanessa Garcia Period 2
In the pod-cast Grammar Girl states that subject-verb agreement is important for sentence structure. Subject-verb agreement is basically the body of a sentence and without it or with it being misused your sentence has no meaning. By being able to form good/ accurate sentences you can have good grammar which is essential in life.
An example of the importance of subject-verb agreement is say you are a constructor and you are working on a house and have all the materials you need but don’t know where they go, you can't build the house unless you are able to identify all the proper locations for the items. This is the same concept as subject-verb agreement. You can not have a sentence without putting the subject and verb in the correct areas and have them correspond with each other.
Another example is if you where to half do a job then you can not call it complete this is the same terminology as subject-verb agreement. You can not conduct a proper sentence without all the resources in all the accurate places and have them agree.
Dear Khadeem,
Through your examples i can see that you grasped the concept that grammar girl was expressing. You showed that you understand when subject verb agreement is being used properly and inaccurately.
On this Podcast, Grammar Girl talked about the agreement between the subject of a sentence and the verb. She explained how some people use plural subjects but instead of using a plural verb to provide for the subject, they would use a singular verb. Which is grammatically incorrect. It's easy to check your work, if you take the subject and the verb of your sentence, and just make sure they match each other.
An example of Subject-Verb agreement is "Michelle and Floyd are outside playing". The subject may not be plural by themselves, however, they become plural together. An example of incorrect Subject-Verb agreement is "Mike and Tina is playing". Mike and Tina becomes they, meaning the verb needs to be are.
-Myshauna Alexander
Tea,
I absolutely agree with you. You cannot get far without knowing how to start. The initial start is knowing how yo place things. Good examples.
-Myshauna A.
So lets try this one more time..
Hello everyone!
In episode 103, Grammar Girl discusses subject-verb agreements and its common mistakes. She explains that according to the subject, the verb must agree. She helps us by giving examples of incorrect forms of subject-verb agreements and what we can do to spot them and correct ourselves.
EXAMPLE ONE: Me and Donna,we is going to the store.
Although this example is extreme, some people do speak like this. Since " me and donna" are plural subjects, the verb must also be plural.
The correct sentence should be "Me and Donna, we ARE going to the store"
EXAMPLE TWO: The astronaut's memories was suddenly interrupted by the honk of a car.
In this case, memories is the subject and it is plural. Therefore, "was" is the incorrect. It should be "The astronaut's memories WERE suddenly interrupted by the honk of a car"
Vanessa--good examples. Everyone knows what they're talking about.
-Vianney Bernabe p.2
Grammar Girl spoke about the abuse of subject-verb agreement. She explains that she encounters a sign at the hospital that was grammatically incorrect. The sign read "The use of cell phones and pagers are prohibited." She suggests to us that we should circle our subject(s) and then underline the verb(s) and then check if it matches. If it's a plural subject then a plural verb should also be involved.
An example of this would be "After the babies finish playing, they is going to be very tired. The correct form should be "After the babies finish playing they ARE going to be very tired."
Another example is "The police officers is going to be promoted."
The correct form is "The police officers ARE going to be promoted."
Mary: I feel that your summary and examples are easily understandable and clearly show that you understood this assignment. Good Job

Grammar girl spoke about how to use plural subjects with the proper verbs. For example when she was at the hospital she saw a sign that was using the incorrect verb with the subject. A singular subject should never be used with a plural verb but should certainly go with it's pair. There is a step that Grammar girl gives that could help when determining this problems. We are suppose to circle our subject then look at our verb and see if they match up.
For example, it would not be acceptable for someone to say "My friend and i is going to the mall." Instead of "is" it would be "are" because its a plural subject.
Another example would be if someone say's "Those boys is running". "Boys" is plural.
Hey Stephanie Calderon, i agree with your examples. A plural subject can't be used with a singular verb. Great examples:)
The benevolent Grammer Girl once again saves the day by correcting grammer. In the episode "Subject-Verb Agreement" Grammer Girl delineates how the use of singular subject is paired with a singular verb. Same rule applies when both are plural. She gave examples of her own to explain what subject-verb agreement actually was if there was some misunderstanding.By the end of the podcast she had properly explained how the grammer rule is applied and also mentioned a few tips for correcting such mistakes.
An incorrect example is "Julian and Plenti is deciding to whether watch a movie or go bowling." The proper way is "Julian and Plenti are deciding to whether watch a movie or go bowling." Another incorrect example of singular subject-verb agreement is "Constantine are going to eliminate the competition." The correct form is "Constantine is going to eliminate the competition." Done!
Response to emoprincess0902: Job well done. I was able to understand what subject-verb agreement meant from reading your blog response. Examples were put so everyone could comprehend which is great.
← Rosas Roger
Grammer girl spoke about minor mistakes about writing a sentence. I learned that a singular subject involves a single item and person. I also learned that a plural subject involves more than one item or person. We have to keep and eye out for small mistakes like that because with these mistakes we can get the whole sentenced messed up.
Example- someone would say Trevor and Nelly is out to eat.
correction- Trevor and Nelly are currently out eating
2nd exaple- I was going out to the football game
correction- I am about to go to the football game
clilflaca06- I agree with this one because you have to go back over work and circle your verbs and make sure you sentence is right

Grammar girl was talking about two specific signs that did not makes sense and which were grammatically wrong. one sign was "The use of pagers and cell phones are prohibited." This one is wrong. it should be "The use of cell phones are prohibited." It's incorrect because a singular subjects always agrees with a singular verb and a plural subject agrees with a plural verb.
One example is:
Melody and Tom is going on a cruise today to the Bahamas. This is incorrect because their plural subjects and should be paired with the plural verbs. It should be Melody and Tom are going on a cruise today to the Bahamas.
Another example is:
Melody and Tom are going to Canada together to go sky diving. This is correct because both the plural subject and the plural verb are combined together with "are" and not "is".
Khadeem,
Your correct with your reasoning on this and it even helped me out a lot.
Grammar Girl was upset about how the doctors in the hospital make an agreement for you, for example when the say "Your patience and consideration is very much appreciated". She also talked about how singular subjects can only agree with singular verbs and plural subjects can only agree with plural verbs. Basically the sentence wouldn't make any sense. For example, the young man are climbing a tree.
An example would be, "The young boy are kicking the baby" is not correct. Now an example that would be correct would be, The young boy is kicking the baby" is correct.
Jesse Machorro.
Karina P, you made sense with her examples because she provided the right and wrong way to use the subject-verb agreement rule.
This weeks grammar girl spoke about how some hospital signs were grammatically incorrect. The sign was an example of subject-verb disagreement. Grammar girl uses humorous ways to show us how to use proper subject-verb agreement. After hearing this I understand better on how to use subject-verb agreement.
Examples:
1.incorrect way: David and Julie is going to a basketball game tonight.
2.correct way: David and Julie are going to a basketball game tonight.
Response:

This episode was about how grammar error can be found in signs and how bad it looks. She talked about what verbs needed to be used for the sentence to be correct, plural or singular. She also talked about being careful with the verbs you use, look at them carefully and if its wrong fix it.
1 EX: "Timmy and Tom is going out for some ice cream." replace "is" with "are" to make it correct.
2 EX: "Jack and Jill is going up the hill for some water". Replace "is" with "are" to make it correct.
I agree with Khadeem because his example is correct and it shows that he understands the difference between plural and singular words.
In the episode Grammer girl talks about subject verb agreement. She talked how the singular subjects and the verb go together. It showed how you can break up subject verb agreement show that you did it in the correct way.
For example, Joseph is going to the park. The subject is Joseph and the verb is going to the park
Nice examples Danny.I was unclear of the rule and with your examples I got the concept more.
Grammer Girl mostly talks about how incorrect the sign makers are in their English. She mostly points out that they misplace the verb is with are like with "The use of cell phones and pagers are prohibited" as the word The is the subject I think that what it said. It is very common though to have a subject-verb disagreement as Grammer Girl says that even the most expert writers suffer from this problem.
Example. One is not going to say "We is playing football" thats just terrible it should be "We are playing football". Another Example would be "Fernando, Francisco, and I is watching America vs. Chivas" it aint going to be like that it would be Fernando, Francisco, and I are watching America vs. Chivas" Those are my examples. Also America is the best team got it?
Grammar girl spoke about Subject Verb Agreements. She discussed how people should be careful with the verbs you use in your sentence because it can cause it to be wrong. That simply means that when you write a sentence you need to make sure that your singular subject agrees with a singular verb and a plural subject agrees with a plural verb.
Ex1: "Alejandra and David is going to the movies."
The correct way is "Alejandra and David are going to the movies."
Ex2: "Wendy and Natalie is going to school."
"is" should be ARE because it is plural.
Great Gilly:I thought your examples were great in showing the proper use of subjects verbs and also helped me.

Rocio Im agreeing with what U have posted. What your saying is basically on the mark and you is gettin what Grammer girl is saying. Thumb Up for you.

Grammar Girl spoke about hospital signs using singular subjects with plural verbs.Grammar Girl said that people make mistakes with singular verbs and plural verbs in there plural subjects. What I understood is that singular and plural subjects and verbs are meant to go together like an exact piece of a puzzle with its other piece.grammar Girl stated to circle or underline the verbs and subjects in the paper and then checking to make sure they make sense or agree.
For example dominique and phil is going to skate. That's incorrect.
Dominique and Phil are going to skate is the correct way to write it.
another example is. michael and allan are going to meet up with rodney at the movies.this is the correct form.
instead of writing michael and allan is going to meet up with rodney at the movies.
Grammar Girl spoke about wrong grammar usuage in hospital signs and the usual mistakes in which many make without noticing. And she uses two examples in which they both have wrong grammar like singular verbs should be with each other as well as subjects.
One example is the use subject verb agreement correctly is: The girl is very fustrated after work. This shows improper grammar:With rage,Cindy goes home after work.Another example is "Misael and Joe is going home",but "Misael and Joe are going home.

The correct way is, Jessica and Carlos are at the park.
Example 2:
Daisy are going to the movies.
The correct way is, Daisy is going to the movies.

What i understood about the podcast today is subject-verbal agreement. Grammar girl spoke about how people make mistakes with their verbs and subjects. Like the hospital sign that was grammatically incorrect.Grammer girl pointed out the hospital sign that stated "The use of cell phones are prohibited". The sentence is incorrect. Replace "is" with are and now it will be correct.
-Brenda and I is going to the mall today. This is an incorrect sentence. The word "is" should be "are" because it has a plural subject.
-An example of a subject-plural agreement is Drew and Berry are playing cards. This is a correct sentence.
Sandra, Your entry really helped my understanding on subject-verbal agreement.Great Job!
To day Grammar girl's topic was subject verb agreement. Grammar girl says to check your mistakes you can circle the subject in your writing and underline the verb. Then you for get about every thing else written except the subject and the verb. Check and see if the subject and verb match and if they don't then you make corrections to your mistakes.
Ex: Lisa go shopping,
this is example is showing you what not to do.
Ex: Lisa is going shopping tomorrow.
Lisa would be circled and going shopping would be underlined.
This post is dedicated to Luis . the examples that he gave was very specific, I enjoyed reading his examples.

This weeks grammar girl is pretty much on the importance of grammar, and how so many people over look simple sentence structure. This includes the minor details that we overlook in such intences such as basic signs or posters. When basic structures and basic grammar rules are ignored, it leads to what the author calls "disagreement". The author also states on how to avoid the whole sub-verb sanario in our works by doing some simple cicles or outling before we complete our work.
Examples:
1. You was there
Its used improper.
2. Mike & Kim are going to the movies tonight
Its used properly
3.I were going to go
Used improper

In this particular podcast of grammar girl she covered Subject verb agreement. Grammar Girl started this podcast by pointing out a hospital sign that she had read. The hospital sign used singular subjects and plural verbs. The grammatically correct way to do this is to have singular subjects and verbs together. Grammar Girl gave easy to understand examples on how to correct and prevent this error form occurring. For example if you have a sentence that says "Kim and Erick is going to the movies" you have a grammatical error that subject and the verb do not match the correct version would be "Kim and Erick are going to the movies". I brushed up on some common knowledge thanks to grammar girl.

Great job, students!
Grammar Girl talked about subject and verb agreement. Sometimes when we write we forget to match up the subject and the verb so our sentences dont make much sence. Grammar girl made an example on how we can check our sentences so that they make sence, she said to circle the subject and then underline the verb and see if they match.
