On today’s grammar girl the topic is about “How to use parallel structure correctly”. A parallel construction is a false series. It occurs when a person combines three or more seemingly related elements but there’s something wrong. When the sentence is correct its parallel construction. In a series, it list three or more things that serve a common purpose within a sentence. Each of the elements, are being disparate items, which performs the same function of the object of the verb in the sentences.

Ex. “Today I will go to school, then work, and finally go home and do my homework.”

Ex. “Im going to buy a new ipod, a new phone, and a pair of shoes.”

Parallel construction is the main idea of most buildings but in this case Grammar Girl is talking about parallel structure in grammar use. When one has a correct sentence, it is said to be parallel construction. Usually, problems with parallel construction occur when people begin to use the false series. This usually happens when one combines threee relavant elements in a series, but the syntax or arrangement is wrong. Although many people do commit this error, there are others that use the proper series. In this type of series three or more things are listed to serve a common purpose. Each of the elements performs the same function for the verb in a proper series, basically. To fix a false series, the best thing to do is to break down the components and make sure each one makes sense before combining them. Verbs can be added when necessary because they will usually make the construction of the sentence parallel. As long as you remember that verbs help a lot when dealing with a false series, you'll be fine.

Ex.1 This is one example of a false series. "David Souter had to revise the paperwork, the court orders, and get people on his side."

To correct this sentence I will use the proper series format. The correct form should be, "David Souter had to revise the paperwork and court orders and get people on his side."

Ex.2 Another false series example would be, "The justices of the United States Supreme Court have to get a vacation, a good salary, and receive gratitude from the President."

To correct this I will use the proper series format. The correct form of this sentence should be, "The justices of the United States Supreme Court have to get a vacation and good salary and receive gratitude from the President."

Response: My response goes to Alex Luviano. Your overall summary is good. Your examples are good, but I think you should correct therm as well. Like for the first one, I think the correct form would be, "Today I will go to school and work and finally I will go home to do my homework." Other than that, you understand the main concept of this week's grammar girl.

In episode 180 of grammar girl she explained to use how to use parallel structures correctly.

In A Parallel Construction Problem: the False Series, this is when a writer combines three or more related elements in a sentence.
Ex. Today i had to go run, play soccer, and wash the car.

Ex. My dad had me washing the dishes, washing the clothes, and drawing.

The third element does not fit with the other which makes it a parallel construction problem.

A proper series- list three or more elements that are related to the purpose of what your saying. If you like you can put them as bullet points.

Adding a verb after the noun will make the construction parallel.

Parallel construction is not just a false series but its also a proper series. You seemed to forget to write about that. make sure to use the proper way not the false series. The proper series is the right way to use a parallel construction. Help the reader or writers by telling them the right thing. Overall nice work

In this weeks Grammar Girls, she talks about how to use parallel construction correctly. She explains that false series is when you have three or more elements in sentence, but with the syntax wrong. The proper use would be having three elements that are used for the same cause. A false series can be fixed by adding a verb before each element, if the elements are not so similar.

Examples-
1. I am going to clean my room, shoes, and pet dog.
Its incorrect because the third element does not go with the first two elements.

2. I am going to clean my room, shoes, and i am also going to pet my dog.
Now that's correct because all the elements are explained correctly.

Response to Alex L
Well you have to put a little more effort because your examples are too similar to grammar girls.

Parallel construction is the combination of three objects that perform the same verb or action in a single sentence. While writing, one should be aware of their diction and syntax. These two factors show whether or not there is parallel construction in a sentence. There are instances when it seems that parallel construction is present and is not present.
For example:

1. I was sent to buy bread, yogurt, and paint the living room.

-- The first two objects are related because you could buy both bread and yogurt; however, the last item of the sentence creates akwardness. You cannot buy and paint the living room, That does not make any sense. This syntax problem is known as a false series the three items do not perform the same action.

Here is a sentence that uses parallel construction:

2. He read the book, the dictionary, and the encyclopedia.

--This sentence is known as a proper series because the same action is being performed. The items are following the same action "read."

An example of fixing a sentence:

3. I was sent to buy bread, yogurt, and a gallon of paint to redeign the living room.

--Now the first example is fixed. It makes much more sense when broken down, and tehrefore it fits the requirements of parallel construction. This is so because of "a gallon of paint." It exaplains the presence of painting the living room in the first exampel.
-To write a proper series, just make sure that each item in the sentence works individually with the verb before parallel construction is used in a sentence.

SARAHALG:]

Comment to Jesse:),

I liked your post; however, I think that you had a little trouble understanding the podcast. Parallel Construction is when three elements or items perform the same action not being used for the same cause. Overall, you have a good summary.

On this weeks Grammar girl she talks about how to use parallel structure in its correct form. The correct way to use it is when you have three elements that are used for the same cause. When it is used improperly it can solved by adding a verb to it before the element if its not similar.

EX..
I went to yogurt land, then to skate, and go sleep at a friend's house.

my mom had me doing chores, cleaning my room, taking out the trash, and cooking.

In episode 180 Grammar Girl informs us on how to use parallel structure correctly. The parallel construction problem is called a false series; meaning that a writer combined three or more recognizable elements in a series, but the sentence structure is wrong. When the sentence structure is correct the listed three or more things serve a common or individual purpose within the sentence. Finally it is very easy to pinpoint and correct the problem by listing each individual purpose or task with the beginning verb and finding the glitch task, if it appears, in the sentence.

Examples:

1. Roger is using the Droid to do his English homework, watch videos, and discover new music.

2. I'm going walk to the beach, my friend’s house and the mall.

Response to Fernos:

You forgot to capitalize my in your second example. Well done entry by the way.

This week's Grammar Girl topic focuses on parallel construction. Because it is sometimes hard to detect, parallel construction is a heavily-used trap found on the SAT Grammar section.
The way to get around this trap is to do what Grammar Girl suggests: take the sentence apart piece by piece and see if each part makes sense.

Well enough about the post, here's some examples.

"Claude is heavily encouraged and sometimes even forced to do things that society expects of him: fight, have sex, and use drugs"

This is a correct use of parallel construction because you can write Claude is encouraged to fight.
Claude is encouraged to have sex.
Claude is encouraged to use drugs.

Example 2:
"Ishmael, his family, and his country are enthralled in war."

Again, the same rule applies.

Response to Rawgrr:
I can clearly grasp that you understand the topic of this week, but what I saw was that you didn't correctly use the semicolon in this sentence:
"The parallel construction problem is called a false series; meaning that a writer combined three or more recognizable elements in a series, but the sentence structure is wrong."

A semicolon is used to connect two COMPLETE SENTENCES that are related. Because you followed the semicolon with an "ing" word, the latter part isn't a complete sentence. You could just write "; it means" and that fixes it.

Hope that helps.

In episode 180, How to Use Parallel Construction Correctly, Grammar Girl talks about the parallel construction. Parallel construction is a combination of three or more related elements in a series. A common problem found when trying to use a parallel construction is the syntax being wrong. The best way to prevent this from happening is to break down the parts and make sure they work alone before combining them.

Ex.

The United States attacked Germany by air, by water, and by land.
-This is a correct example because they are following the same action "attacked".

The UK, the USSR, and the USA defeated the Nazis in World War II.
-This is another correct example because each of the three serve as the subject of the verb "defeated".

Fernando B, your summary is good but I think you should give an explanation of your examples and make them more complex.

This week's grammar girl she is dicussing about "How to use parallel structure in a correct way." Lets start by explaining what a parallel structure is, it is a false series. It happens when a writer tends to combine three or more related elements in a series but the synntax is wrong, when you are using the sentence in a correct way it is reffered to using parallel construction.

Ok, so a series is when we list three or more things but that serve a common purpose within a sentence.

For Instance:
" Im going to buy a new handbag, sweater and a scarf.

-- This is an example of a proper series because they all perform the same function, "to buy".

Ex.

He has traveled by airplane, car and train.

These items are all performed by the same function of the verb "traveled."

So, basically a false series is when something does not combine toghther so remember a to list three or more stuff that perform the same function of the verb in your sentences to avoid any errors.

Reasonable Rama,

I like how you get straight to the point an your examples are clear and shows your understanding of this weeks concept. But I think you should have explained what is parallel construction in a more understanding details, then to go straight to the examples.

How to use parallel construction was the subject of today's Grammar Girl. A parrallel structure is basically a lined up series of three or more events and it's only a parallel structure when used correctly. The events can all be different as long as they belong to the same verb.

For Example:
-My homework today is to finish up my grammar girl assignment, read a 200 page book, and write a 300 page book report on that book.

or for those who still have trouble understanding the idea here...

-When I get home I am going to watch television, play videogames, and listen to music.

This week I'm going to reply to Megajojo24. Firstly, he needs one more example as part of the assignment to get full points. Secondly, he needs to revise his paragraph summary because there was more said than just seperation by commas. My advice is to pay more attention to the Podcast, read as she lectures, and pay attention (that's a third example). Sorry for being harsh, but I'm only helping you as a class mate.

In this weeks grammar girl the topic is “How to use parallel structure correctly”.A parallel construction is a false series. When somebody combines three or more seemingly elements then theirs a error. when a writer combines three or more related elements in a sentence.

ex- Today i have to go take my driving test, then go on a date, then finally ill be home.

ex- Trevor when you get out of school dont forget to do homework, wash, the dishes then take that trash out,

The false series happens when one combines three or more seemingly related elements in a series, but the syntax is wrong. When one gets the sentence right, it's said to be using parallel construction. So to fix these false series, one would break down the components; making sure they work individually before combining them. One could also get rid of the series altogether.

Ex. Dorian longs for pleasure, beauty and wants to be forever young.

The first two make sense but the third doesn't. So lets reword this.

Dorian longs for pleasure, beauty and youth.

Ex. Jill swam with rhythmic pulsing, gracefully, and beautifully.

The first makes sense but the last two don't. Lets get rid of the series.

Jill swam with rhythmic pulsing that was graceful and beautiful.

On today's grammar girl the topic is about parallel structure. A parallel construction problem is a false series. This happens when the writer combines three or more related elements. A proper series is a list of three or more things that serve a common purpose.

Examples:

1."Tommorrow I will wash the clothes, the shoes, and the homework."

"Tomorrow I will wash the clothes, clean the shoes, and do my homework."
-----------------------------------
2."My father helped me washed the dishes, grass, and helped me with the project."

"My father helped me washed the dishes, mowed the grass, and helped me with the project."

G.G. talked about "How to use parallel structure correctly” and why its important to know how to use it. She says that incorrect parallel structure is when you combine three or more related elements but seem wrong. When it is a correct parallel structure there is a list of three or more things that share a common purpose with a sentence.

Examples:

1. I am going to buy a guitar, take it home, and play it.

2. I want to write a song, play the song, and sing the song.

Comment: Diego

I liked your summary because it was very clear. It helped me understand parallel structures a bit more better.

Unknown said...

This week Grammar Girl focuses on using correct parallel construction. People often make the mistake of combining related elements in a series or sentence that are incorrectly written. To avoid false series we can always break down the components and make sure that they work individually. If they do work individually than it is correct. (:

Example 1: “The purpose of using MLA format is to write a well-organized paper, show the authors sources, makes reading easier.” My elements in this sentence are incorrectly written because if I break it down they won’t make sense. The correct way to write this is: The purpose of using MLA format is to write a well-organized paper, to show the sources, and to make reading easier.

Example 2: “You must always cite another person’s work, double space the paper, and put your last name with the page number on the right top corner.” In this sentence I use a proper series because if I break it down it makes sense: You must always cite another person’s work. You must always double space the paper. You must always put your last name with the page number on the right top corner.

Response to Sandra V.:
Your summary was to vague and it made me think that you don't really understand the material, but your examples show that you do. Next time you should take some time to write a better summary. In one of your examples you wrote "My father helped me washed the dishes, mowed the grass, and helped me with the project." which is incorrect, you can fix it up and rewrite as: My father helped me wash the dishes, mow the grass, and helped me with the project. Theres no need for the -ed.

This week Grammar girl talked about "How to use parallel structure correctly". Usually a false series occur when a writer combines 3 things that they dont quite go with eachother. For example if someone says i will clean my room, bathroom and walk. The walking doesnt go with the first verb because you cant clean walk. Many writers make many mistakes when writting because they dont realize that the verb doesnt go with the subjects.

Ex:
Incorrect:

I will walk my dog, the cat, and clean.

Correct:
I will walk my dog, the cat and after go clean the house.

This week Grammar Girl speaks about how to use parallel structure correctly. A parallel structure is when you have a false series. a false series is when you have three or more elements in a sentence. The correct way to use this is by making sure all three elements are used for the same reason.

Ex 1: I went to the store to buy fish, lettuce, and clean my room.
- This is not the correct way to use parallel structure, so its called a false series.

Ex2: I played with the dog, cat, and the rabbit.
- This is the correct way of using parallel structure because all three elements are related.

This happens when most writers put together three or more related things in a series. When you get the sentence correct its known as a parallel construction. In a proper series it lists the things that have a common purpose making it sound reasonable.

examples:

1. My teacher had me stay after class, clap erasers, and clean the desks.

2. Today I will fold my clothes, clean my room, and do laundry.

Grammar Girl this week talks about the usage of parallel structure. Parallel structures are three or more seemingly related elements put into a series. The easiest way to know whether you have the proper way of parallel structure is if you break down the components, and make sure they work individually before combining them. You can also just add verbs.

Examples:
- I slowly walked in my room, locked my door, and sat on then floor.

- He told me to quickly go home, pack my clothes, and hop in the car with him.

Response to Trevor:
Trevor, you understand the conceot of this week's grammar girl very well. However, I did catch some grammar issues with one of your examples. First you have: "Trevor when you get out of school dont forget to do homework, wash, the dishes then take that trash out,". You should be careful with your commas! The correct way to write your sentence would be: "Trevor when you get out of school dont forget to do homework, wash the dishes, then take that trash out." Other than that you did good!

Parallel construction is one of the main ideas to keep a sentence correct when one is using three or more relevant elements in a series. There is a common mistake when one tries to keep parallel construction, and that is that people begin to use the false series. The syntax or arrangement of the elements in the sentence is what makes the sentence become makes it become a false series. The false series may be a common mistake, but there are many people that do use the proper series. The proper series has three or more elements that serve a common purpose because each of the elements executes the same function for the verb that is being used. As for the false series, to fix it is as simple as breking down the components to make sure that each element makes sense with the verb before you want to combine them together. Verbs can be very helpul when wanting to keep the construction of the sentence parallel and as long as you know that verbs can be of use, then you don't have to worry too much about making a mistake.

Ex.1 This is an example of a false series, "Psychologists must know the psychologic terms, the psychologic topics, and have an idea of what it is like in the human mind."

The correct form of this sentence should be, "Psychologists must know the psychologic terms and psychologic topics and have an idea of what it is like in the human mind."

Ex.2 Another example of a false series is, "Gordon Allport received recognition, an accolade, and his theory became well-known to other psychologists."

The correct form of this sentence should be, "Gordon Allport received recognition and an accolade and his theory became well-known to many other psychologists."

Response: My response this week goes to Danny Boy. Although you hit some main points in your summary, you need to show that you understood the concept by correcting your well-done examples. You gave good examples, but you need to show the correct form as well. Other than that, good job!

Grammar Girl 180 talks about the correct way to use parallel structure. Many people have problems with parallel structure called false series. False series is when you use three or more similar elements in a series but has an incorrect syntax.
She explains that the way to fix this error is to break down the elements and see if they make sense individually.

Example 1:
I am going to fix my bike, my skateboard, and my scooter.
[This is the correct way to use parallel structure.]

Example 2:
Today i skated all over West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Culver City.

Response to whisperinthewind0104:
Your first example has to much details. i'm not sure if its a false series or a proper series.

In this week's Grammar Girl Parallel Structures were discussed. A Parallel Structure is when a series of things are written in the correct format. When a Parallel structure is not written in the correct format it’s called a false series. A false series occurs when three or more things are listed with an incorrect syntax. So when these false series are fixed it's called Parallel Structure. To fix a false series one should break down all components and "make sure they work individually before combining them".

Ex. This is an example of how a false series would be:
I was asked to clean, had fun, and ate.

Ex2: The overall sentence above doesn’t make sense because it does have a parallel structure. The correct sentence would be:
I was asked to clean, and I had fun while doing that. After that I ate.

Response:
My response goes to Roberto. Your overall summery was correct but you need to add more on it because the episode covered more points. As for you examples, they are correct but you could have added one that was incorrect and then fixed it, so we could clearly see that you understand. Great Job =D

In episode 180, Grammar Girl goes over proper use of Parallel Constructions. Parallel Constructions are when a writer combines three or more similar elements in a series. A False Series is when a Parallel Construction is incorrect because of improper syntax. An example of a False Series would be:

Over winter break i will work on earning more money, homework, and listen to music.

This sounds wrong because i can't ". . .work on listen to music." So the proper way to write this sentence would be:

Over winter break i will earn more money, do homework, and listen to music.

Another example of proper use would be:

"The websites that i currently have open are the HamiltonHighSchool.net, Grammar.Quickand DirtyTips.com, and Blogger.com."

Response to Diego:
You explanation made was right if you were talking about Parallel Constructions, and not False Series. Your first example was correct while you second was wasn't and that was alright because you where trying to show the difference; but, when you show an example that is incorrect you should rewrite it correctly to show how it could be done. Also, you should put quotation marks on your examples since they should be coming from your original writing.

On this weeks Grammar Girl, she talks about how to use parallel construction correctly. One main point is a false series, which is when a writer combines three or more similar sentences or elements into a series, but the arrangement of the sentence is wrong. The construction of the overall sentence just doesn't mesh together. She advices you to break down each element, revise it, make sure it works independently and then combine them into one whole sentence/series.

EXAMPLE #1
"I walk down the street, then I saw a homeless, and felt sorry."
-Maybe this would sound better if it was written as "I walked down the street, saw a homeless man, and felt sorry for him."

EXAMPLE #2
"The book is about three familes, written in separate stories, and narratated by each mother."
-Here you have three elements that are related to what the book is about and how it is written.

COMMENTS:
First I want to comment on Rama's entry. It was very clear and i really liked your examples because you explained them very thoroughly and broke each element apart to show how the structure of the sentence would work for this grammar girl. so great job!! it really helped me understand this one.

The main focus of this G.G. was parallel construction. She explained that the correct format was by coalescing more than one sentence that are related to each other. The wrong way would be combining sentences that do not mingle correctly together. The series begins when three or more elements in a sentence serve the same basic principal. If the series is incorrect, than go back over your original and delineate each sentence to form the correct series.

Ex.
Under a microscope the cells in the test tube were red, clustered, and grooved.

The pervious rainy days made me feel composed, neutral, and joyous.

To Jeffery Lopez,
You properly executed your examples and summary. My only suggestion to you, is to make sure you review your comment before posting. Capitalize the "I" in your second example.

This weeks grammar girl talked about the correct way to use parallel construction. A parallel construction problem is the false series which is when a writer combines three or more seemingly related elements and the syntax is wrong. In a series you list three things that serve a common purpose within a sentence. In order to fix a problematic parallel construction make sure to break down the components and make sure they work individually before combining them.

Examples of correct parallel construction :

A child needs their family to feel safe, loved, and depend on.

The nurses sterilize the equipment, the anesthesiologist measures the sedatives, and the doctors rush to save his life.

Commenting on griseldaissac

Its about "How to use parallel structure correctly" right now. Mostly a false series when using items that are the same however you construct it incorrectly. In order to fix the problem, break the components, and make sure they work individually before combining them. After that the sentence should make sense.

Ex. Today I will go do homework, the kitchen, and observe. It does really make sense. It goes "Today i will go do homework and go to the kitchen and observe"

Ex. I will get my friend a gift, a book, and an itunes gift card

Fernando, Alex's first example makes sense because if you break it up and put I will it makes perfect sense.

This week grammar girl speaks about how to correctly use parallel construction. The trick to fixing a series according to grammar girl is to make sure that each part of the series can stand alone. Usually it happens with three or more components or a series, but they dont quite combine well.

Ex. 1:
Throughout the week I went to starbucks, studied, and went to school.
The parallel construction in this sentence is balanced because the objects and verbs in the sentence were connected.

Ex. 2: She will study history, physics, and calculus at the library today.

This is the correct use of a series because all of the components are relevant to each toher and can stand alone.

Response to Roberto:
Roberto, you provided examples that demonsrate your grasp of the concept however you lack explanation of why tthe examples are correct or incorrect. Next time you should write a brief explanation of why your examples are right or wrong.

This weeks grammar girl talks about the correct usage of parallel structure, which is a false series. A false series happens when a writer combines three or more seemingly related elements in a series, but the grammatical arrangement of the words in the sentence is wrong. in a proper series there will be a list of three or more things that serve a common purpose within the sentece. Each of these elements perform the same function. To fix this all you have to do is make sure that they work just fine before fusing them into one.

Ex. Mary likes eating, listening to her music, and driving all at the same time.

Ex. Marshals law firm asked him to write his report quickly, accurately, and thoroughly, due to the last minute meeting with their new partners.

Response to Diego: Your examples show that you know how to identify a false series but it would have helped you, and others, if you corrected them in the end. Other than that, good job.

Parallel Construction is the topic discussed by Grammar Girl this week. She tells us about a huge problem that many writers make which is the false series. It is a combination of three or more related elements in a series but with incorrect syntax. Grammar Girl advises us to break down the components in order to fix the problem. Placement of verbs is essential in the correction of these Parallel Structures. If you are going to put a single verb for the series it has to apply for all objects. That is all Grammar Girl explained to us. Here are some examples.

Example 1: In my math class we had to solve sine, cosine, and tangent functions.

Example 2: The human body consists of joints that are immovable, slightly movable, and freely movable.

This week's Grammar Girl was about parallel construction and how to use it correctly. Parallel construction is a false series, this happens when three or more seemingly related elements are combined but there's errors and it is corrected. Parallel construction is when you break all three elements down to form a proper series.

FALSE
EX.Last week I went to a restaurant, the beach and washed the dog.

PROPER
EX.I was told to wash the dishes, give my younger brother a bath and buy some things at the grocery store.

13 weeks strong and this weeks version of grammar girl is about a correct parallel structure. What is a parallel construction. There are things like a false series which occurs when three or more related elements but there is something wrong. When the sentience is correct it is a parallel construction.

ex
I think I'm going to buy a new skateboard, go to the skate park and later on skate at a local high school.

I just want to go to target, buy a modern warfare 2 and play all night long.

Your examples are indeed correct but try dishing out some incorrect examples to show the difference between the original example and its correction

Today's edition of grammar girl teaches us how to use parallel structures correctly. First she explains a parallel construction, which is a false series. It happens when a writer combines three or more seemingly related elements in a series, but the syntax is wrong. In a proper series you list three or more things that serve a common purpose within a sentence. Make sure when you're handeling a series break down the components, and make sure they work individually before combining them.

For Example:
I went to the mall, bestbuy, and i picked up some food.

This example of a series is incorrect. The words mall and bestbuy become the objects of the verb went. While the word food is the object of the verb picked. These do not work, because they do not surve a common purpose within the sentence. The correct way to write this sentence would be to eliminate the series all together.

For Example:
I went to the mall, and bestbuy, and i picked up some food.
Now the words mall and bestbuy become objects in the verb went, and picked becomes the second verb and the sentence, while food is the object of went.

When three or more seemingly related objects (usually by subject verb agreement)in one sentence, but one or more objects does not parralel the verb,it is a false series.

For example:
The Great Depression was caused by an increase of tariffs, too much credit, and bad loans.

Increase is our verb. To have a parallel structure, the objects must relate back to the verb.

here's the sentence broken down

an increase of tariffs
this is okay...its true that tariffs were increased.

an increase of too much credit
this is incorrect. "an increase of too much" doesn't make sense. this is redundant and not necessary. It doesn't connect to "an increase".

To fix this sentence connect the objects and the verb.

The Great Depression was caused by an increase of tariffs, credit, and bad loans.

that sounds better. Now we have a list of increasing problems that led to the Great Depression.

i feel your example is not relevant to our topic this week

I walk down the street, then I saw a homeless, and felt sorry."

even when you did correct it to

"I walked down the street, saw a homeless man, and felt sorry for him."

each is an independent clause and does not need to be parrallel to a verb to make sense. I think that each clause does not need to be dependent upon "i walked".

For this week, Grammar Girl helps readers learn about identifying and using parallel structure properly. She uses a few sentences as proper examples with parallel structure applied to the object of the verb and the subject of the sentence. Grammar Girl also shows how to fix mistakes of incorrectly using parallel structure; you can separate the parts of the sentence and apply each of the three or more parts from the parallel structure to see if it relates properly to the rest of the sentence.

Examples:
(1) False Series --> Judy usually had a listless, bored emotions, or a sad expression.

To fix this, I could write Judy usually had a listless posture, bored emotions, or a sad expression.

(2) False Series --> The birds descended from the sky, chirped, and pieces of bread crumbs.

The correct sentence would read: The birds descended from the sky, chirped, and ate pieces of bread crumbs.

Hey Maddie, your summary was a little confusing; it might've been because of the minor spelling error and possible grammatical error. However, breaking down and fixing the sentence from your example show a clear understanding of this week's topic.

Grammar Girl explained "How to use parallel construction correctly". She explained that a false series combines three or more things but not all of them relate with the verb. She also explained the proper series. A proper series is when all of the objects relate to the verb.

Ex.."I pulled out my uniform, took my shower, and got dressed..."

Ex.."I stepped on the runway, looked at my mom, and began to approach the foul line".ganacibi

Jesse,

I think you should read over your work before you post it. You explained the podcast very well in your summary, however. Also, you seem to write the way you talk. You may want to work on that.

Today's Grammar Girl talks about parallel construction. One way to mess that up is by doing a false series which is having three or more related elements in a sentence but using the wrong syntax for them.

EX: In the morning, if there's time, I eat 2 waffles, a fried egg, 2 sausages, and drink orange juice.

In that sentence, waffles, a fried egg, and sausages all relate to the verb "eat" but "drink orange juice" does not, therefore, the sentence is not really in series, it is false.

An easy to correct false series is to simply break the series entirely.

Ex: In the morning, if there's time, I eat 2 waffles, and a fried egg, and 2 sausages, and drink orange juice.

However there are other ways to fix false series depending on the situation as demonstrated by Maddie. All those ands in my sentence make it sound convoluted to me so I will fix it another way.

Ex: In the morning, if there's time, I consume 2 waffles, a fried egg, 2 sausages, and a glass of orange juice.

In this case I fixed the series by changing the verb "eat," which only applies to food, to "consume," which is ambiguous to both food and beverages. I suppose you should always check if you can fix your series another way before just outright breaking it to make it more smooth.

@everyone:
I noticed many people keep saying that parallel construction IS a false series which is not true. If you look/listen closely to what grammar girl said you will see she in fact said parallel construction was when everything was CORRECT and that a problem OF parallel construction is false series, they are not one in the same. See you jive turkeys next week . . . or whenever we do this again.

In todays podcast Grammar Girl talks about how to use parallel construction correctly. Grammar Girl states that a parallel construction problem happens when a writer combines three or more seemingly related elements in a series, but the syntax is wrong. A proper series is a list of three or more things that serve a common purpose within a sentence. In a false series there is a disconnection. Also Grammar Girl states that you could bullet-point them as a proper series.

tea_finley said...

One example of a proper series is: Today my mother will clean up the bathroom, her room, and outside.

Another proper series would be:
Today i will do my:
(a) english homework
(b) chemistry homework
(c) chores

tea_finley said...

Dear Robert430,

Your example does not show a proper series.

"My teacher had me stay after class, clap erasers, and clean the desks."

A correct way you could write it to show a proper series is:

My teacher had me stay after class to clap erasers, clean the desk, and sweep the floor.

This weeks Grammar Girl is about how to use parallel structure correctly. She talks about how a common problem is when you combine three or more seemingly related elements in a series. To make sure you don't do this you need to break down components and make sure they work individually before combining them.

Ex: I love to dance, read, and watch movies.

(correct way)
Ex2: I love to dance, read, and watch movies.

(also)
Ex3: I love to dance, to read, and to watch movies.

This week grammar girl is about "How to use parallel structure correctly." A parallel structure has false series. When it is three things in one sentence. The sentence is right but some elements in it are not. The sentences most have common with in it.

Ex: Today I will go to my aunts, tomorrow my unceles, and than I will go back home.

Ex: When she gets home she does her homework, watch televiews, and listen to music all at the same time.

I do not really get this grammar girl can someone help.

RawrGrr! why do u need the my to be capitalize if it is a common before it.

This weeks topic was somewhat confusing to me, but ill give it a shot.
This weeks grammar girl is about parallel construction. When a writer combines three or more seemingly related elements in a series you could have a syntax if it is wrongly used or a parallel construction when it is used correctly. When you want to make a proper parallel construction you would use 3 or more things that serve a purpose in the sentence. when used incorrectly things will sound off.

EX.1
"Usually when i go to guitar center i buy Strings, picks, and books."
it works well because all are easily related to the verb "Buy".

Ex.2
"The dining table, the salad table, and the snacks table, were all picked clean by the time i got there."
im not sure if this one works well.

@Justin:
in your second example you have televiews. i suggest you fix that with television. Your first example could use some work also.

Hello mr.jingles92,
Your summary and examples are good. Your second example is correct because the elements related to the verb "clean."
Well done!

Hey guys and gals :] Well this week i learned about how to use parallel structure correctly. You'll know when your sentence is wrong when a person combines three or more elements in a series. When you get the sentence right, then it's called parallel construction.A good example of incorrect parallel structure is, "Lauren felt that the trip to Mexico was a waste of time, boring, and took too long." A correct sentence is, "Helen loves laughing, smiling, and joking."

Peace out homies! =D

- Sandra Fernandez

My response is to f.serrano93

Hey Fernando i like how you really tried to explain what parallel construction is, but i think you could of cut it down. It's very lengthy and we don't want students getting bored or dozing off. Other than that your fabulous :]

This week, Grammar Girl discusses "How To Use Parallel Structure Correctly". A parallel constructed sentence contains three or more related elements but only that one or more of them doesn't fit within the sentence. Each of the elements should be related because it has the same function. In order to fix this problem, separating the elements and adding the appropriate verb before each of them adds specification.

Example : Tomorrow I have to clean the bathroom, the windows, and shop for clothes.

It should be written: Tomorrow I have to wash the bathroom, clean the windows, and go shopping for clothes.

Mr. Jingles92, your second sentence does work well, because they are all related and even if they weren't, it was specific in terms of the verb.

On this weeks grammar girl I learned what a parallel structure was and how to correctly use it and apply it into my writing. Parallel construction is a combination of three or more related elements in a series. When you are sometimes using parallel structure the most common problem is the syntax being wrong, but the best way to prevent this from happening is to break down the parts and make sure they work alone before combining them.

Examples:
1. While shopping today I will be buying sweaters, boots, and scarf all for the winter.
The reason why this is an example of a proper series is because they all perform the same function, "to buy".
2. While heading to my trip to El Salvador I traveled by plane, wagon, and walking.
Again, these transportation items are all performed by the same function of the verb "traveled."

Response:
Trevor, I can see that you understand the concept, but in your explanation you forgot to put that the correct way of doing. You were getting there but you probably forgot to put that in. Overall good job with your examples.

On today's grammar girl the topic is " How to use parallel structure correctly". Grammar Girl covers the mistake that is othen made when attempting parallel construction. This commonly commited error is called false series. A false series occurs when a person combines multiple seemingly related actions but the syntax in which the actions take place is incorrect. To create a proper it doesnt matter the objects that you choose as long as they react with the verb prior to stating them.

Ex. I'm going home and then i'll get some rest and maybe eat.

Ex. Tonight I'm going out to the club then the bar and finally a friends house.

Great example lucy very clear for anyone having trouble.
