The episode 29 was about generic singular pronouns.
The problem was that nobody really knows what pronoun to use anymore when talking about a person of unknown gender.

A good way to avoid this problem is to rewrite the sentence. If that's not possible, you need to see if people you're writing for have a style guide. If not, use he or she to play it safe, or use they if you feel bold and are prepared to defend yourself.

*examples*
1. A student should show ______ respect to teachers.
(1) REWRITE THE SENTENCE!
Students should show their respect to teachers.
(2) PLAY IT SAFE!
A student should show his or her respect to teachers.
(3) BE BOLD!
A student should show their respect to teachers.

2. The retailer tends to hire a good-looking person, whether or not ______ is competent for the job.
(1) The retailer tends to hire good-looking people, whether or not they are competent for the job.
(2) The retailer tends to hire a good-looking person, whether or not he or she is competent for the job.
(3) The retailer tends to hire a good-looking person, whether or not they are competent for the job.

In Grammer Girl, It talks about generic singular pronouns. In the beginning, it talks about how people were confused on what pronoun to use like he or She when talking about a "Unknown Gender".

in the Grammer Girl,it said that it is very confusing when switching He and She. Bryan calls switch He and She "Whiplash Grammer".

Example: “He or she seems too awkward, he seems sexist, and one seems archaic.”
Here Grammer girl talks about how "exclusively using shealso seems sexist, the hybrid s/he seems silly and awkward, and switching between he and she is downright confusing to readers."

Response: Juhyun Kim is very smart and it looks like she knows what she is talking about. I like how she made the examples step by step.

Grammar Girl #29 is about generic singular pronouns. Grammar Girl says "the problem (Nolan is talking about) is that nobody really knows what pronoun to use anymore when talking about a person of unknown gender." For example if you say "everyone should visit his or her parents" you could also say "everyone should visit their parents". You could fix generic singular pronouns by putting "they."

"They" should be used regardless to the singular antecedent rule. Using "he" or "she" is pointless.

This grammar girl was on personal pronouns. Personal pronouns are words like he and she. I dont really mined about what to use, it really has to do with the subject of what you are talking about.

___ can become president.

___ is a good student.

The grammer girl is about generic singular prnouns. The problem is that no one really knows what pronoun to use anymore when talking about a person of unknown gender. To avoid the problem you could just use their. For example if the teacher says everyone should do his or her homework tonight. She could just say everyone do their homework tonight. Another example, if you say everyone should wear his or her sweater tomorrow because it might rain. you could say everyone should wear their sweater tomorrow because it might rain.

I learned about generic singular prnouns. it was about how to use them when refering to a person.sometimes they can be wrong when refering to a person and people wont be able to know how there using it.

example:
the sweater belongs to him or her.
you can say the sweater belongs to one of them.
example:he or she should take care of the kids.
they should take care of the kids.

I learned that the problem is that noone knows what pronoun you use to talk about the gender. I learned that if you are writing a "formal" document, you should use "he/she." Something that I found interesting was that it is OK to use "they" as a singular antecedent.

Examples:

1. The students should thank their teachers for helping them suceed.

2. A child should thank his or her parent for supporting them.

2. I think that Jasmin Marin was a little mistaken and unclear about this podcast. She doesn't really show the function of generic singular pronouns. Her examples show possession, not the function of a generic singular pronoun.

1. Julian's first example was good. But, his second example, which is "Please take this time to thank he or she siting next to you.
", should be "Please take this time to thank his or her sitting next to you."

2. Navpreet Singh's examples were good. She seemed to understand very well.

Most people use "HE" as a pronoun to describe a person of an unknown gender because of its dominance. Which is WRONG. When writing about a person of unknown gender who a suppose to use "he or she" or "their" Even though your sentence might not sound like it makes sense, it most appropriate.

ex) 1. Every employee is incharge of their own belongings.

Every employee is incharge of his or her own belongings.

2. The manager lost his or her phone

This was my favorite episode so far because I have always wondered what to do with generic singular pronouns. I agree with Grammar Girl's advice that the preferred solution is to avoid the situation by rewriting the sentence. I will follow her advice and use "his or her" when necessary. I am too conformist to take the bold route and use "their."

Examples:

1. A baby with separation anxiety can be comforted with his or her favorite toy.

2. A baby with separation anxiety can be comforted with a favorite toy. (best alternative - rewrite)

3. A baby with separation anxiety can be comforted with their favorite toy. (bold alternative -- use "their" despite the singular antecedent)

Juhyun Kim gave great examples of each option Grammar Girl described. But the second example could be rewritten to avoid the problem: The retailer tends to hire good-looking people, whether or not they are competent for the job.

Carlos Moreno also gave excellent examples of the bold alternative.

After reading all these posts, using "they" and "their" with a singular antecedent doesn't look so strange anymore!

Grammar girl also said that when she write formally she always uses" he or she." There is a way to aviod this problem; you rewrite the sentence so that you can use they, instead of using he or she and seeming sexist.

Examples

1). The student cheated on his test.
( the wrong way....you dont want to be sexits)

Episode 29 is about generic singular pronouns. Many people are uncertain of what propoun to use when talking about a person of unknown gender. Grammar girl explains that the best way to avoid this problem is by rewriting the sentence. If rewriting the sentence is not possible, the writer needs to find out the style guide of the person they are writing for. Or you can play it safe my using he or she.

ex:
1. The teacher will provide each student with a pencil so that he or she can complete the test.

2. Each employee will secure his or her items in a locker.

some examples are

In Grammar Girl #29 we learn about generic singular pronouns.
Many people don't know whether to use he or she when talking about a person of unkown gender.

One way of avoiding this problem is to rewrite the sentence.
You can also use he or she to fix the problem in a safe way.
The last solution to this problem would be to use they. Using they would require courage!

Examples:
1. ___is in charge of doing the homework.

SENTENCE REWRITTEN:
The students are in charge of doing the homework.

USING HE OR SHE:
2.He or she is in charge of doing the homework.

HAVING COURAGE AND USING "THEY"
3.They are in charge of doing the homework.

Response:1
Kim's examples made it easier for me to understand this grammar girl.

Response:2
Mr.Juan.c didn't really give an example, he just continued explainig on how to fix generic singular pronouns. but its all cool though I still love him.

Podcast # 29
This podcast demonstrates to the reader the proper way to avoid sexism and perhaps award sentences by rewriting sentences with he/she. Using "They", "their". When a gender is unknown its best to avoid sexism. Play it safe and use plural nouns such as the ones I mentioned before.

Ex.
A employee should always show his respect to a costumer.
Or safer
A Employee should always show their respect to a costumer.

Duckie knows what shes talking about and her examples are useful and understandable.

Deciding what pronoun to use is very hard when we don't know if the person we are referring to is male or female. Grammar girl suggest that we rewrite the sentence, and to see if the person we are writing for has a writing style so that we can use it. However if this isn’t possible then to play it safe use he or she and if you are sure of what you are doing it is okay to use they.

Examples:
#1 The employers secured his or her belongings in the locker.

#2 The employers secured their belongings in the locker.

This grammar girl episode was about generic singular pronouns. Grammar girl talks about the problem that most writers have with using singular pronouns. I learned that the best way to use the pronoun was to use, "he or she", when giving an example of an unknown person. I also learned that it is possible to use "they" even though it is a plural pronoun and won't really fit in with the singular subject.

Examples:
1. If anyone misses the test, ____ must make it up on Tuesday at lunch.

Solution: If anyone misses the test, he or she must make it up on Tuesday at lunch.

2. I should call his/her home tonight. (Preferred)
I should call their home tonight. (Risky)

Responses:
