Episode number 45 is about Comma Splices. A comma splice is when a comma is used in a wrong way to force two main clauses together. Commas are meant to separate "two things that could be sentences on their own with a word such as "and", "but", or "or"." The comma would be placed before the conjunction. This was an important episode (as they all are) and one which will make me pay more attention to where I put my commas.

Examples:
I began to jump rope, and Mark started counting.

I love to dance, but I am not a professional.

In this blog the issue at hand is comas. They stated how comas can be tricky because they can be used so many ways. However people mainly use coma splices. A coma splice is a when a comma is used in a wrong way to force two main clauses together. That just means that when you join two things that could be sentences on their own with a word such as “and,” “but,” or “or,” you need a comma before the conjunction.

ex. she started preschool, and missed her first day

she started preschool, however she missed her first day

-courtnei johnson

i think jackie used an simple but important ecxample. She clearly gave reasons and exaples as to why splice commas are easy mistakes.

People aleady make a well note that you need a comma before the conjunction. Commas are mostly use for two things that could be sentences on their own with a word such as and, but,or or. You use a semicolon when the second clause expands on the reasoning of the first clause.

ex. Jon was buying deodorant, and Henry was buying the shampoo.

ex. Al wanted to buy all the series of Sailor Moon, but he also wanted to buy all the sailormoon action figures.

This episode is about comma splices.
In one way, commas are used to separate two main cluases that are connected by a coordinationg conjuction, such as "and," "but," or "or."
Comma splice happens when the comma is used to splice together two complete sentences, not functioning of a comma.

*examples
1.
I ate a lot of candies, I got fatter. (wrong)
Since I ate a lot of candies, I got fatter. (right)
I ate a lot of candies, and I got fatter. (right)
2.
My brother is the most talented person I've ever seen, he always impresses me.(wrong)
My brother--the most talented person I've ever seen--always impresses me.

*responses
1. Jackie's examples were good. She used conjuctions very well after comma.
2. Courtnei's examples were good, too. She also used conjuctions. What's interesting was that meaning differs according to a conjuction.

This episode is about comma slices. Comma slices are when a comma is used incorrectly. Comma slices forces two main clauses together. A comma is meant to separate two sentences, that could stand on their own, with conjuctions. Semicolons can also be usd to separate to main clauses. The second clause should expand on the reasoning of the first clause, when using a semicolon.

Ex:
1. I have a jacket,but it doesn't keep me warm
2. Bob cleared the table, and I did the dishes.

Comma splices are always placed incorrectly in sentences. The signification of commas are two separate a sentence that could possibly be one and not two. By using the words and or but you can combine to like sentences and make them one. Therefore the comma would be placed before the conjunction.

When Daniel came home, everyone hid.

I went to the soccer game, but it was empty.

Episode #45 is about the use of commas. Commas are used to separate two main clauses that are connected by a coordinating conjunction. You need to have a coordinating conjunction to add them, and if you don't have one the sentence is then called a comma splice. It is called a comma splice because it splices together two complete sentences. You can fix comma splices by adding a semicolon or a period.

ex. #1:
Today is my birthday; I'm turning 17.

ex. #2:
Billy likes the color blue, but Sarah likes the color red.

response #1:
Everyones examples I read were great especially Juhyun because she shows the wrong to the write.

response #2:
I didn't understand Courtnei's examples. Is she trying to show wrong then right as well. If not I think her first example (she started preschool, and missed her first day) should be changed because "missed her first day" is not a complete sentence there is no subject.

In episode 45 is about how tricky the commas are used because it needs to go in the correct spot. Also because they are use in many different ways.

Examples:

1. I went to a date late, and my date was mad at me.

2. My date was mad at me, but I kissed him to say sorry, and he said he forgive me.

Response:

1. The example that Jackie Fuentes used it makes so much sense and it is understandable. The example of the deoreant and the shampoo.

2. Ana's example is from number 2 is understable and it seems like if the she got the episode and what it is talking about.

The commas job is to separate two main clauses that are connected by a coordinating conjunction. For example, I love to play volleyball, but I'm too short to hit. I noticed that when I write I have those comma splice, but not anymore because grammar girl informed me of how to use a comma the right way. Thanks Grammar Girl!!!! =)

I learned that a purpose of the comma is to separate two main clauses that are connected by a coordinating conjunction.I also learned that the words "and, but, and or," have a comma placed in front of them. When two sentences are closely related, you can use a semicolon, which is a sentence splicer. I thought it was interesting how a a comma in the wrong place can change the entire meaning of the senternce.

Examples:

1. I ate lunch, but I was still hungry.

2. i was either going to the park, or the gym tomorrow.

GRAMMAR GIRL #45 IS ABOUT COMMA SPLICES. A COMMA SPLICE IS WHEN A COMMA IS USED TO SEPERATE TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSE THAT CAN STAND ON THEIR OWN. A COMMAS JOB IS NOT TO SEPERATE THEM UNLESS THERE IS A COODINATING CONJUNCTION THAT FITS THERE. THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO FIX COMMA SPLICES 1. TO REPLACE THEM WITH PERIODS, 2. TO REPLACE THEM WITH SEMICOLONS ONLY IF THE SENTENCES ARE RELATED, OR 3. TO PUT A COODINATING CONJUNCTION AFTER THE COMMA.

EXAMPLE #1:
WRONG:IT WAS APPARENT WHAT NATALIA DID, SHE ALWAYS LIKED MAKING HEARTS ON HER PAPERS.
RIGHT: IT WAS APPARENT WHAT NATALIA DID. SHE ALWAYS LIKED MAKING HEARTS ON HER PAPERS.

EXAMPLE #2:
WRONG:I LOVE STRABERRIES, I HATE FRUITS.
RIGHT:I LOVE STRAWBERRIES, BUT I HATE FRUITS.

RESPONSE #1:
I FOUND DANIEL'S RESPONSE TO GRAMMAR GIRL SORT OF HARD TO FOLLOW; HE HAD A GOOD IDEA,BUT HE DIDN'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF.

RESPONSE #2:
I LIKED THE WAY THAT EVA'S RESPONSE WAS PERCISE AND TO THE POINT. HER EXAMPLES WERE ALSO GOOD TO EXPLAIN, BUT IN HER SECOND EXAMPLE SHE USED TWO TENSES WHICH MADE THE SENTENCE INCORRECT.

Well in Grammar Girl, episode 45 she talks about how commas are normally used and misused, a comma is used to separate two main clauses that are connected by a coordinating conjunction. Grammar Girl talks about a grammatical error called a comma splice it occurs when the comma is used to splice(or join) together two complete sentences instead of a conjunction to link two independent clauses or a period at the end of each sentence.

This episode again is about how people misuse punctuation, but I think that the cure is worse than the disease. " I love reading, it's fun" is a grammatically incorrect comma splice, but correcting it to "I love reading. It's fun." is boring. It seems to me that a better way to fix the comma splice problem is to write more varied sentences. So instead of writing "The election is over, Obama won" [wrong], I would fix it by writing "After a long election season, Obama won."

I think Navpreet Singh was mistaken in his example "I am either going to the park, or to the gym" because the second clause is not a stand alone sentence.

I liked Daniel's example because he varied his sentence structure.

This episode was about how Comma Splices are used in sentences. These sentences not only contain commas, but they also have a conjunctions such as "and", "but", "or", placed right after the commas.

Examples:

I helped my aunt with her groceries, and she let me go out with my friends.

In Grammer Girl, I understood very thing and some of the error examples are the same errors I have made. I now understand that when I use a comma to use And, But, Or right after. If there are two main clauses that relate to one another, then i can use a semicolen. Everything is simple and I now know how to use my commas in future assignments and essays!

We commonly misuse commas in our writing, episode number 45 talked about comma splices. The most common way to use commas is used to separate two main clauses. Words like “and”, “or” or “but” are used to join the sentences, with a comma before the conjunction.

Examples:
#1 Today is her brother's birthday, so she took him to the movies.

#2 The soccer game was over, but the crowed refused to leave.

Grammar girl #45 was about commas splices. Grammar girl explains that a comma splice is an error used when you put in a comma instead of putting in words like "and, but, or" in a sentence, when describing two difference things that can be two separate sentences. for example, if you say, "i went to the store, I saw a man standing on the corner." That would be a comma splice. The right way to say it would be: " I went to a store, and I saw a man standing on the corner." Or you can just separate them into two sentence by saying:" I went to the store. I saw a man standing on the corner."

Response#1
I think that Jackie did an excellent job with her examples because it showed that she understood the grammar girl.

Podcast #45 is about using the words, concrete and cement properly in sentences. Basically, cement is powder while concrete is solid. Concrete is an existing material or physical form, real or solid, but not abstract. On the other hand, Cement is a powdery substance made by calcining lime and clay, mixed with water to form mortar or mixed with sand, gravel, and water to make concrete. Saying that cement makes concrete.

Examples:
If you go to Home Depot, and you ask for dry cement, they would look at you in an inauspicious way.

Or in reverse saying: wet concrete.
