I think when people use the word "that" their using it as an adjective. Sometimes people use the word when its not really needed. Its just a habit when we use the word in our text.

Example.
I really like the purse that you bought.
OR
I like the purse you bought.

Another word similar to the same is "really". We use these words most of the time to show our reader that were showing enthusiasm.

Grammar Girl 110 was pretty cool and explained many things about the functions of "that". As lucid as this grammar girl was, it provided many examples. In this grammar girl, using "that" isn't nessecarily pointless nor wrong. However, a person should be very discerning when using "that".

Before I move onto a few examples of mine, I want to elaborate a bit more on "that". In some sentences, you may find it nessecary to actually use "that" twice.

Sentence Type 1a:
• Craig thought the world was going to end because it was hailing.

Sentence Type 1b:
• Craig thought that the world was going to end because it was hailing.

In the examples I've made above, the word "that" can be used to sort of emphasize a person's thoughts and/or opinion.

Sentence Type 2a:
• Craig began to love that "Your a Jerk" song by New Boyz and thought that he should start dancing.

Sentence Type 2b:
• Craig began to love that "Your a Jerk" song by New Boyz; He started dancing to the song because it was enjoyable.

Both examples above are primarily to express the power of "that" and the way it can alter a sentence.

Agreed. Alot of times you'll read over somebody's sentence and notice the word "that" is sort of used to support the upcoming clause(s).

As I was writing the sentence above, I was going to use "that"; Using the word really is a habit because we've just gotten use to it over a long period of time.

Agreeing with Andy9.
Using the word "that" is not worng. Grammar girl is just letting us know, using the word "that" sometimes is not needed.

And as Andy9 pointed out, even though its not wrong to use the word, it still has to be known that people are using the word all the time when it is not needed.

IN GRAMMER GIRL #110 SHE TALKED ABOUT HOW THE WORD "THAT" CAN HELP A SENTENCE FLOW AND HOW IT IS SOMETIMES NECESSARY IN A SENTENCE.IT CAN HELP A SENTENCE FLOW BUT IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE WIRTER AND HOW THEY WANT THEIR SENTENCE.ONE REASON TO USE THE WORD "THAT" IS WHEN YOU THINK YOUR SENTENCE MIGHT BE MISUNDERSTOOD.

EXAPLES:
1)SHE WANTED TO BUY THAT DRESS SHE SAW AT THE MALL BUT SHE DIDN'T HAVE ANY MONEY.

2)SHE WANTED TO BUY A DRESS SHE SAW AT THE MALL BUT SHE DIDN'T HAVE ANY MONEY.

YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO COMPLICATE YOUR SENTENCE BY ADDING A SECOND "THAT"

1)SHE WANTED TO DANCE TO THAT SONG BUT HE THOUGHT THAT IT WAS TOO FREAKY.

2)SHE WANTED TO DANCE TO THAT SONG BUT SHE THOUGHT IT WAS TOO FREAKY.

RESPONSES

I AGREE WITH BOTH BREE AND ANDY BECAUSE LIKE ANDY SAID WHEN USING THE WORD "THAT" THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG IN USING IT.BREE SAID THAT PEOPLE USE THE WORD "THAT" AS AN ADJECTIVE AND I AGREE WITH HER AND IT IS ALSO A HABIT WE JUST TEND TO HAVE.

I learned that it doesn't matter whether or not someone includes "that" in a sentence, because it means the same thing with/without it. It's all about the person and what the person prefers. I thought it was interesting how not including a "that" when necessary, can change the meaning of the entire sentence. Grammar Girl just emphasizes us to exclude "that" when it is not necessary and use it when needed.

Examples:

1. I was going to the gymnasium, so that I could lift weights. (emphasizes what I was going to the gymnasium for)

2. I was planning on not playing Basketball, so that I could finish my project. (clears ideas and explains the reason for not playing basketball)

Using the word "that" isn't that big of a deal, it's whatever you want to say. It's the same as people using the word "like". Sometimes it helps clarify what you're trying to say and sometimes it just gets annoying.

Just like Andy said, using "that" can help emphasize the point you're trying to make.

Examples:
"I thought he said go over there." has a somewhat different effect than saying "I thought that he said go over there."

I learned that you don't have to have the word that in a sentence. It can sometimes help, and sometimes hurt yours sentence. If your sentence already has one or two "that's" already then you shouldn't want to put more to complicate it more. You use the word that when your sentence can be ambiguous or misunderstood. For example,

"Ann thought the car behind her was going to hit her."
Or
"Ann thought that the car behind her was going to hit her."

Using to many that's can lead to the misunderstanding on the sentence. For example,

"Meagan thought that the producer was going to love her song, and think that her voice was great."

"Meagan thought that the producer was going to love her song, and think her voice was great."

The examples above shows the way that you can alter the use of the word "that" the a sentence.

The rule of thumb appears to be that whether or not to use the word "that" is generally a matter of personal preference, as long as the sentence flows and can be understood by the reader. Two additional rules are avoid being redundant or repetitive and be sure your sentence structure is parallel. My personal preference is to use fewer words.

In the first sentence I wrote above, the word "that" is necessary to make the sentence flow and to clarify where the rule begins. In the second sentence I did not say "be sure THAT" because it is unnecessary and the sentence would not have a parallel structure.

All of the examples that have been posted previously illustrate that the use of "that" is largely a matter of personal preference.

This episode was about the word "that." Sometimes it's okay to omit that since the meaning is same. However, leaving it out could lead to misunderstandings.

"That" can help a sentecne flow. When you use that, it's important to keep parallel construction and avoid the double that.

*examples
1. I realized that my brother just slapped me and that he ran away.
- keeping parallel construction

2. He loves my dog is so faithful.
He loves that my dog is so faithful.
- In this case, "that" is necessary. Otherwise, readers would misunderstand.

*response
I think NATHALIE RUIZ used "that" as a demonstrative adjective in her sentences.
But in the episode, Grammar Girl is using "that" as a conjunction.

She could have written her first sentence like following: She wanted to buy the dress that she saw at the mall but she didn't have any money.

In grammar girl 110 grammar girl talked about the importance of the word "that" in your sentences, but how it can also harm your sentence, you shouldnt use too many that's in your sentence. Using that in your sentence can help you sentence not be misunderstood.
for example..

Julie asked the employee if he could give her the dress on the window.

Julie ask the employee if he could give her that dress on the window.

I told edwin that I wanted that colored pen that was on that table.

3)When i was new to this school they used to say that i was a shy person but the true is that I am.

example:i was going to the store, so that i would buy food.

This podcast is about how and when it is best to use "that". Grammer Girl explains that "that" is not always necassary to use that. However it does help your sentance with its rythyme or flow. I leaned that you should avoid using double "that".

examples::

James thought we were going to meet at 7.

James thought THAT we were going to meet at 7.

Bob thought going home was a good idea.

Bob thought that going home was a good idea.

I tink Bree Pittman is right about the word "really"

The episode #110 is talking about how the word "that" makes more sense and makes the sentence flow. It also explains how sometimes the word "that" doesn't need to be use in the sentence but everyone specially me likes to keep using. Just like how grammar girl said that she keeps using it because it make the sentence rythm. The word "that" is sometimes necessary when writing. I agree with that because not all the times you can use another word.

Examples:

1. My mom has that book that you have in your hand.

OR

2. My mom has a book just like yours.

Response:

1. I think that Bree did a good job in writing her examples and that they are very understood. her examples were put with the word "that" and without it.

2. Andy did the same thing also with writing his examples with and without the word "that'.

I learned "that" sometimes improve the flow of a sentence, it depends on the person whether they feel it helps it or not. If you have more than one "that" in your sentence, adding another "that" would complicate the whole sentence. I also learned when you are writing a sentence make sure your "that's" maintain a parallel construction.

Ex #1
1.

a. Ashika thought that she had to stay awake because of that bet she made with her friend.(incorrect)

b. Ashika thought she had to stay awake because of that bet she made with her friend (correct)

* See, I didn't need the first "that" my sentence sounds perfectly fine without it.

Ex.#2
2.

a. I like that cake you that you bought(incorrect)

b.I like the cake you bought me (correct)

Podcast #110 was about when to use the word "THAT". In some cases it's perfectly fine to leave out “that”, because a sentence could mean the same thing with or without it. But sometimes "that" Can Help Sentence Flow, and it is also sometimes necessary.

Example:
I need an extra book, so that I could do my homework. (incorrect)

Why? because you don't necessarily need "that" there.

You could've just said.........

I need an extra book, so I could do my homework. (correct)

This Grammar Girl was about the use of the word "that." It is usually optional for with some writers, it helps the flow of their sentences and with others, it creates more words than is needed. However, there are a few rules for the use of "that." Writers should include that if leaving it out can cause the sentence to become ambiguous. This, in logic, is called the fallacy of amphiboly in which a phrase can have more than one meaning (ambiguity) due to grammatical errors. An example of this fallacy is "He was upset about the fact evolution was widespread among scientists." To correct this fallacy a "that" needs to be inserted between "fact" and "evolution." Correction: He was upset about the fact that evolution was widespread among scientists. The word "that" also needs to be avoided being used consecutively. The girl knew that that boy liked her is an example of this. This, for many people can be confusing because it appears to be an error or typo when it could be avoided. This can be done by leaving the first that out and the sentence would still maintain its original meaning.

Anonymous said...

I think what Ashika meant to say is not that if you use to "thats" in one sentence that they should maintain a parallel structure but she meant to say the "thats" that are used the same way or that are parallel should be consistent.

Anonymous said...

I found myself at first disagreeing with Bree's analogy of the word "really" to the word "that" because "really" would be vague and the degree to which something is "really" something is rarely measured when "really" is written. But now, I see that really can help the flow of a sentence, fulfill an element that makes up style, and also like "that" it is needed in some instances. The instances in which "really" is needed depends exclusively on context. To say "He was really flying." would be needed if we were told earlier or maybe even later that he couldn't fly or it was difficult for him to fly or that he had never flown before etc.

In this grammar girl, I agree with the fact of using "that" when in doubt. I know I use the word "that" when I feel doubt about something. Grammar girl explains when you can eliminate the use of the word "that". It is best to not use it if you had already had it two or more times. It is very important how you use the word "that" becaue it can lead your sentence to be wrong. You start writing something and end up writing something else, end up getting lost. Somtimes the word "that" isnt even necessary to use.

For example:1
1. She told me that her mom wasnt going to let her go to the party.
or
Example:2
She told me her mom wasnt going to let her got to the party

Response:I agree with Bree's response, I dont think the word "that" is needed but its just people just have the habit of using it.

Grammar Girl explains that it is up to the writer to decide whether to use “that”. Using that may sometimes help the flow of the sentence, having an extra that does not hurt the sentence, but having an omission can cause a misunderstanding. But another option can be to eliminate unnecessary “ that” because the sentence makes sense without it.

Example:

Well I thought grammar girl 110 was really interesting, it was good to learn that you dont have to use "that" often and that you could replace it with other words or just leave it off. I liked this podcast because grammar girl explained when or when you should not use the word. The word "that" can be often removed from a sentence and still make sense, but in some cases "that" is needed to make your sentence flow or so the sentence can make sense. For example grammar girl's example was
"Aardvark maintains Squiggly's yard is too big." and with the correction it is "Aardvark maintains that Squiggly's yard is too big (5)."

Examples

1a. The shirt I that wanted to buy was out of stock.

1b. The shirt I wanted to buy was out of stock.

Above is a sentence that makes sense with or without "that."

1a. Tito thought that he was going to die when he got shot.

1b.Tito thought he was going to die when he got shot.

The sentence above is an example of how "that" emphasizes Tito's thought that he was going to die.

Using "that" can also help prevent "garden path" sentence, a sentence that seem to mean one thing but for other people seem to be different. There is no big deal using "that" more than once, but we have to see how to put it correctly to make our sentences look good and meaning one thing for everyone..

This episode of grammar girl was a quick and useful one, as they all are. In it grammar girl talks about when the use of the word "that" is necessary and when it isn't. What I understood was that it is mostly used to improve a flow of a sentence. If you are not sure of when to use "that" it's always best to use it. It's better to have an extra word than leave it out and have someone misunderstand what was trying to be said. One thing I didn't understand was her sentences with Aardvark and Squiggly. I don't know if it's just me, but neither one of them made sense. I guess I'm just really tired. :D Wow I write a lot!

Examples:

When to use "that":
I like that boy you introduced me to yesterday.

When not to use "that":
That boy that you introduced me to yesterday was cute.

Could rewrite it like this:
The boy that you introduced me to yesterday was cute.

Response:
I think Mizzbr3zzy understood what grammar girl was saying. But I don't think in the sentence she wrote "that" is being used as an adjective. I could be wrong though but I believe for it to be an adjective "that" would have to be in front of the word "purse" to describe it. (Ex. I really like that purse you bought.) Please correct me if I'm wrong I have no idea what I'm talking about right now!

Futhermore, when using the word "that" in a sentence it is a reason that the sentence will be ambiguous or misunderstood. Also it is important to avoid a double "that" because your sentence will not be a parallel construction.

In this podcast I learned when to use the word "that" in a sentence and when to leave it out. It depends on your sentence and how it flows.
Some people use it to help the reader understand and others leave it out because they say its unnecessary. It's necessary when your sentence could be misunderstood.

ex:1
"His implication is your small and short".

"His implication is that your small and short".

I also learned how to avoid using "that" twice.

ex:2
"My best guess is that i can do that in an hour".

This podcast is about when it is appropriate to either include or exclude "that" in a sentence. It is neither necessary or unnecessary, it's simply one's personal preference. Some think it aids the flow of his/her sentence, while others think anything unnecessary must be omitted. However grammar girl goes on to explain why "that" might be a necessity at times. You can add "that" when your sentence isn't lucid. You might want to omit "that", when there is another that or too in the sentence already. Also one should maintain parallel construction.

Examples:[avoiding double "that"]
Micheline knows that eight absences are not acceptable for a senior, and she will not walk the stage.[correct]

Micheline knows that eight absences are not acceptable for a senior, and that she will not walk the stage. [incorrect]

examples:

I hate the dress that you picked out for me, it does not suit me.[incorrect]

I hate the dress you picked out for me, it does not suit me.[correct]

responses:

It is difficult to decipher the incorrect or correct usage of "that", because it depends on how the writer wants the readers to interpret the sentence. However I do agree with Andy that people often use "that" more than it is needed. People confuse spoken English with written English. It is ok to say "that" in a sentence, but when writing it down it looks better if "that" is omitted.

After looking over most of the entries of other students, I concluded that many of them grasped the concept of the usage of "that". It really is a simple concept. However, it would be helpful if people would indicate which of their examples where correct and incorrect. Since this podcast about "that" is based on personal preference, I could assume which sentences where correct based on what I prefer(to use few words as possible, or in other words omitting "that").

But in some cases, the word "that" is necessary because the reader could have a hard time understanding what the writer is trying to say. She also talks about keeping parallel construction but also avoiding the double "that".

Examples:

1. I wanted to let you know I am going out of town next week. (In this example, the word "that" is not necessary but it could help the sentence flow.)

I wanted to let you know that I am going out of town next week. (Here, the word "that" does help the flow of the sentence, but it is not necessary.)

2. George wrote song(s). (This sentence is incorrect. In this sentence, the word "that" is necessary to show that he wrote a specific song the writer is mentions.

George wrote that song. (I added "that" and I noticed that the meaning of this sentence is changed as to the specific song he wrote.)

Responses:

I liked Andy Smith's response because his examples were explanatory. His second example, "Craig began to love that 'Your a Jerk' song by New Boyz and thought that he should start dancing", showed me how the meaning of the sentence could change by adding "that".

I also liked Kjh1877's examples. Both of her examples demonstrated that she completely understood this episode. She helped me create my own examples and showed where "that" is necessary and how it can also flow with the sentence.

Grammar Girl 110 was about when to use the word "that". You can use "that" to help your sentences flow better. Some people delete "that" because they feel it is an unnecessary word. Try to avoid using "that" twice in one sentence. Use "that" to keep parallel structure.

Example #1
It is important you do your homework.

Example #2
It is important that you do your homework.

Response #1
Andy's post is so nice. explained the podcast and even used vocabulary words to do it. His examples were very clear and he even had more than he needed.

Grammar Girl # 3, Podcast # 110 explains how to improve the flow of a sentence. The flow of the sentence "that" depends on the person whether they feel it helps it or not. If there is more than one "that" in a sentence, including another "that" would complicate the entire sentence. Something also explainedm was when you are writing your sentence make sure your "that's" maintain a parallel construction.

Example 1.
The team thought that their coach was very frightening.

Example 2.
The team thought their coach was very frightening.

Comments
I would second both Bree and Andy's statement. Like they stated
when using "that" there is no wrong or right way in using it.
Bree explains that writers use "that" as an adjective. It is a habit, like i used in the previous sentence.

Grammar Girl podcast #110 talks about how the word "that" can help a sentence flow and how it's sometimes necessary in a sentence. I learned that using the word "that" in a sentence doesn't really matter because it means the same thing with or without. I also learned that if you already have "that" in your sentence, adding another one would just complicate the sentence.

Example 1:

She wanted that candy because she was hungry.
or

She wanted candy because she was hungry.

Example 2:

I like the shoes that you bought yesterday.
or

I like the shoes you bought yesterday.

I really liked the example bree gave because she made it clearly understandable for when a writer should use the word "that." Although in both cases the sentence means the same thing.

Grammer girl explain how some people use that in places you really don't need.Because some people just have a habit of using that. Some people think that it'll make the flow of the sentence improve.

example-I think that my friend stayed home today.

I think my friend stayed home today.

This grammar girl was about using the word "that"and that sometimes its not neccessary and not needed.also it says using that can help the sentence flow.
some examples:
-Jose knows he will not accept a fail.
-Jose knows that he will not accept a fail.

-Julio told his mom he wanted a car for his graduation present.

-Julio told his mom that he wanted a car for his graduation present.

I think that Jackelyn G. did a very good job in explaining the grammar girl.IT helped me understand when we can use the word "that" and when not to.

The grammar girl podcast was pretty interesting. The word THAT has many functions and can be used in many ways. Some people use the word that an adjective. Using the word is not wrong.

Example-
I really like that duffle bag you have.

Example-
He love that game of football, which made that new phrase i Love the game.

This grammer girl talked about the word "that", and how using "that" too many times can ruin your sentence. But also by using that in a sentence can help emphasize another word.

example:He thought that the girl looked amazing with her new hair style.

example:She thought he looked amazing in his new sirt.

The basic thing that I was refreshed on reading this blog was the correct and incorrect way to use the word that.
I found that I myself used the word that twice in sentences. Because of this helpful blog I won't be doing it again. I also learned yet again how these mistakes can throw others off even though you know what you mean others may not.
The blog also does talk about how the word can be used just for personal reasons by the individual which is not bad. They talked about how it's bad to leave them out rather than place them in with to many.
Here are some of my examples.
EX1:Incorrect:We loved that the park put that new ride up.
Correct:We loved that the park put the new ride up.
EX1:Incorrect:I want to that new vinyard so that I can get a feel for it.
Correct: I want to go to that new vinyard so I can get a feel for it.
i AGRRE WITH MS bREEZY because she is right so people could be using it a adjective and it's just kind of a part of our natural vocabulary to use that twice in our text. But now we see that it is incorrect.

Grammar girl 110 was about using the word "That". How somthimes we give are self the thought of using the word in places we shouldn't or should. Like for examlpe, with other words people may miss use, Was, Like, and It. That may also run in with us using was words like "that' more than once in one sentnces.

Example 1: That day was the that she and her boyfriend broke up.

Example: That was the day she and her boyfriend broke up.

Comment to everyone this was a pretty cool grammar girl like always. I always see my self apply it to my own writing haha. All the examples I read though is awsome.

Grammar Girl #110 talked about the wORD "THAT". You should only use it when its necessary. Some sentences need the word "that" so it can flow much better. It can also hurt how your sentences sound.

Example 1:
My mom brought that car here.
My mom brought the car here.

Example 2:
My cousin bought that orange.
My cousin bought an orange.

Responce:
I raelly liked how Nathalie explained her examples.

I agree with Richard, that you don't have to use the word "that" all the time.

In Grammer girl #110, The podcast talked about when and where to use the word "That". There are times the word "That" is used more than once and at times it is not needed. But The word "That" helps the flow of the sentence and brings a better understanding. Just note that also too many of them can lead to a miss understanding.

Examples:

"I always knew 'That' she loved him"

"I need 'That' tank of gas for the motor"

Response:

The Comment posted by Bree Pittman is very true I believe. Alot of people including myself are used to using the word "that" more than once in a sentence. It is a habit and we understnd it better. But its a habit that can be broken and be made better.

I think when the word "that" is used, its used as second adjective. It is used to describe something someone did. "That" is a common word, so its hard not to say it.

example 1- That is very nice.

example 2- I used that website yesterday

I agree with mizzbr3zzy because the word "that" is a commonly used word and its hard to shake.

I also agree with jasmine because I don't think using the word "that" is a big deal. We all use it.

I've always read over my essays and stuff like that, and I would always put "that" when I thought the sentence would need to put "that" in order for my sentence too make sence. Now i know what to look after when i read something over, or when im writing so i dont have to write extra.

I think the word that is used a lot because most sentences have adjectives in them. Its often used when people are explaining something, but more often used when not necessary. Also the word that is used in excuses. Also people use the word really a lot because most times you are writing people don't want to be board and readers like to see enthusiam.

Example

I didn't do that because i wasn't over there when that happened

Or

I didn't do that because i wasn't over there when it happened.

I like Ryan's examples on the word that it gave me a better understanding the way it was so life like.

I also like Juan's because he gave a different look at the word that by including relationships.

What I think Grammar Girl #3 states in this episode is that some people tend to use "that" as an adjective. She also talked about how the word "that" is sometimes necessary in a sentence. So basically "that" isn't really a big deal it's somewhat the same as using the word "like" so sometimes it just helps people understand what your trying to say and it makes a sentence more clearer and understandable.

Examples:

#1. My sister has that dress that you have on.

#2. My sister has a dress just like that.

Response: I can tell Andy9 understood this Grammar Girl by his examples.

1. today GG talked about the word "that," when it's okay to leave it and when it's not necessary and it's okay to omited. The word "that" can help the sentence flow, an sometimes it's just a personal desicion if using the word "that." Sometimes using the word "that" is necesary because it keeps the mining of your sentences, other way can be misunderstood.

2. Liz said that she was 18.
Liz said she was 18.

Marty thought that Liz was 18.
Marty thought Liz was 18.

3.I liked how NATHALIE RUIZ explained.

I learned in Grammer Girl #3.110 that how the word "THAT" can help the rythm of the sentence. Also that you should use “that” when in doubt. Or when your sentence could be ambiguous or misunderstood.

~1A. I like the bat you bought at sports authority.

~1B. I like the bay that you bought at sports authority.

~2A. I thought you went to buy the necklace.

~2B. I thought that you went to buy the necklace.

~3A. I thought the grammer girl was do thursday not wednsday.
