"Irony"
Irony is when something happens that wasn't expected. The setting has to be right for it to be ironic.Irony is dependent upon the person expectations. For example when Palin video that talks about turkey slottering, when she not too long ago she visited a turkey farm that politician do for thanksgiving. So the irony is that right after she came from the farm she did a video on how bad turkey slottering is.

The irony in this video explains that Palin not only eats meat but if she felt like killing an animal she would go out and do it. Irony is when something happens and it is the opposite of what someone expects.Irony is the point of view that the people see it and there beliefs.

Response: No one has posted their comments.

Irony means the opposite of what is expected, or, perhaps more accurately, something that is inconsistent with or incongruous with what is expected. In the video, the incongruity was watching Sarah Palin pardoning a turkey immediately before giving an interview with turkeys being slaughtered in the background. What makes this video ironic depends upon your point of view -- for a hunter the irony would be Palin pardoning a turkey, while for a Democrat it would be Palin being oblivious to the turkey slaughter right after claiming to pardon a turkey -- but in either event there is an incongruity.

The irony that struck me watching this video was that Grammar Girl's podcasts are so tedious that I expected her to be a complete geek, yet she appeared fairly normal in the video.

Another great example of irony is the recent incident involving Susan Boyle's appearance on a British version of "American Idol." Because of her plain looks and lack of romantic involvements, one would expect that she could never be successful on such a show. Yet her singing was so pure and magnificent that she swept the judges away. Boyle showed us all the irony in our glorification of beauty and power -- that none of those things actually create happiness, talent or the ability to meaningfully affect other people's lives.

I learned that there are many different types of irony, but the most common type is when something unexpected happens. In the video, irony was shown when Sarah Palin was expected to pardon a turkey, but instead, showed turkeys being slaughtered in the background of her interview. Something that I found interesting was that setting and expectations play a major role in irony. Irony also depends on the point of view and the belief of the people involved.

Examples of Irony:

1. "Don't yell at me," Jake yelled. (This is ironic because Jake is yelling at someone else, while he does not like being yelled at.)

2. "People should recycle, just like my family," said Jimmy in his new video. In the background, Jimmy's brother is seen throwing away his soda cans and his old school papers into the trash can. (This is ironic because the viewers expected Jimmy's family to recycle, not throw away soda cans and papers.)

I thought that Jacob had a clear understanding of irony. I liked his example of irony and how he explained it. Susan Boyle and her appearance on "Britain's Got Talent" is a great example of irony. I also agree with Richard, when he says, "The setting has to be right for it[irony] to be ironic. Irony is dependent upon the person's expectations." This is true because for something to be ironic, the setting and person's expectations must be set. After reading Jacob's great comment, irony was even more clear to me than it was before!

Reponse: Navpreet's example of Jake yelling "Don't yell at me!" was a great example of irony because of the internal inconsistency. This reminds me of the teachers at my sister's school who cite students for dress code violations while themselves wearing clothing that is inappropriately revealing.

Irony refers to an event that occurs that was completely unexpected. In this Grammar Girl, it is thoroughly explained and many examples were given. Today though, will give a few examples of my own. I was suprised it was in video format as well, which was quite ironic since it usually is a Podcast.

• Nick grabbed the Fire Extinguisher and to his dismay, actually caused the fire to increase.

• When I drank the Water, it caused my mouth to be even more dry.

In response to Navpreet's post, I believe it was quite detailed. The concept was really grasped and they also had great examples. The examples had a bit of humor in them.

Irony is a literary or rhetorical device, in which there is an incongruity or discordance between what one says or does and what one means or what is generally understood. Irony is a mode of expression that calls attention to the character's knowledge and that of the audience.

Example of irony is in the video when Palin loves meat and if she wanted it she would go kill a animal for the meat. Irony is when something happens that a reader would not expect.

Response: Richard's response was good it gave a good definition of irony. It also had a few good examples.

Andy's response is good to, I use to believe that Andy was not the smartest kid but now I see that he was just holding back.

From looking at the video, it is evident that irony is an unexpected event.ent forms of irony convey at different moments in any particular siuatiion. Palins form of irony comes to play when she discusses her love for meat. Irony is something that we nessarly dont expect to happen but so happens to in any given situation.

ex.
Mark got a D in ms allens class, but its ironic that his dad 30 years ago got a D in his english class

I think that nevprets examples were really desciptive and informative.

I also think that richards examples gave clear and concise information and diffrences about irony.

In this podcast I have learned that there is a lot of irony, and the most common irony is something unexpected irony. Something that I have learned in this podcast is that irony plays a major role in the settings and expectations. And one last thing irony also depends on peoples point of view of what they think.

examples:
when I drank water, it wanted me to drink more water.

That girl had a fight.

response:
I liked Navepreet singh because he had good examples and has good details in to it. Like his summary which kind of explained that he got the podcast.

This Grammar Girl Episode was about irony. Irony is the notion that something unexpected or contrary has occuring. Usually it (irony) has to be placed within a certain time frame. The example given was Sarah Palin getting a slaughtered turkey for Thanksgiving and then coming out and saying that slaughtering animals was wrong. It is important to distinguish between irony and contradiction. Irony is closer to humor and can be contradiction looked at from the point of view of expecting one to follow through or "practice what they preach." Irony is not necessarily contradction either. It can be and often appears that way but isn't always.

Example of irony: A man says he is for gay rights. The next moment a gay man cuts him off on the freeway and the man replies by calling him a "faggot."

Richard Chatman's decription was clear and concise.

Well this grammar girl is about irony.I learned that there are diffrent types of irony but the common one that everyone knows is when something unexpected happens or something completely the opposite of what you expected to see happens. The example on this grammar girl is when Sarah Palin is doing an interview about pardoning the life of a turkey and in the background there is a turkey getting slaughtered.

-An example of irony is when my aunt kept complaining how hot it was and bought herself a steaming cofee while we drank lemonades.

-Another example I remember is when a guy with a mohawk and pierced face started playing classical music with his guitar, when I thought he was probably going to play some metal.

I really liked Navpreet's example because it was detailed and helped me understand this podcast better.

I also liked Phresh Kid's example because it helped me understand the podcast better with hi examples.

This episode was about irony. Irony(to be exact, situational irony) is when something happens that is opposite of what people expected. Irony depends on the point of view, the beliefs of people are involved, and people's expectations.

*examples
1. In Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, people think that Dorian Gray, who had innocence and beauty on his face, would never commit a crime. However, Dorian Gray brutally murders his friends.

2. Throughtout the Harry Potter series, Severus Snape is depicted as a suspicious and unreliable character. And when Snape kills Dumbledore with the "Avada Kedavra" spell, harry potter and his friends' hostility and bitterness against Snape reach a climax. However, Snape later turns out to be a double spy. He has been contributing to the cause of virtue, even risking his life.

*response: I loved Jacob Artson's example of irony!!! Susan Boyle, she is truly the best example of irony. From her looks, people expected that it would be amusing and fun to watch her. However, she turned out to be a wonderful singer and made everyone awestruck.

"IRONY"

Irony is when something is happened unexpectedly. The setting has to be right and random for it to be ironic. For example when she knew what was happening in the background of her interview on turkey slathering, when she visited a turkey farm. Her actions would make it ironic because you would never think she would show a video like this.

ex.
"I'm aware of the irony of appearing on TV in order to decry it, so don't bother pointing that out."

"It is a fitting irony that under Richard Nixon, launder became a dirty word."

Richard chatman would understand this topic .. and courtnii johnson would understand this topic .. they would think it was humor what Palin did and did it right .. good job you guys.

This Podcast was about irony and to demonstrate to the world how pathetic Palin is. Irony happens when the something that was not expected occurs. In the video she is said to be in a turkey farm to pardon a turkey before its cooked. The smart politician later came back from the farm and did a video on how sinister it is to kill turkey. Is that some irony or is Palin just retarded?

Irony is when the least expected thing happens. What makes something ironic can be for example the turkey story of them saving the turkeys and as she gets interviewed she doesnt realize that a turkey was being slaughtered right behind her creating it irony, who would ever expect that to happen..No one!
Grammar girl also uses an example of palin if she wanted meat shell kill an animal.

In this week video on "Irony" is the use of words to convey a meaning that us the opposite of its literal meaning, in other words irony is a situatiuon in which something in which something seems to be one thing (or one way) and is actually another. In this video grammar girl used the example of Sarah Palin proceeded to do an interview with a local TV station while the turkeys were being SLAUGHTERED in the background!! It's no surprise that Palin lacks a sense of irony and no surprise that she okay the background to her interview. It was simply that she pardoned a turkey and then babbled for several minutes to the teevee while a turkey was meeting its maker in the background. This is called irony. Harmless humor is frequently derived from it

Examples:

1. You break a date with your girlfriend so you can go to the ball game with the guys. When you go to the concession stand, you run into your date who is with another guy. This is irony.

2.That most catholic priests swear to a life of celibacy, and preach that homosexuality is evil.
Then have sex with choirboys.

This is ironic because his own creation killed him and we would expect the creation to be docile with him.

Irony

Irony means when something happens that was totally opposite of what was expected to occur. In the Palin video, Grammar Girl used an example of irony because Palin pardons the turkey, but in the background, the video shows the turkey actually being slaughtered.

Examples:

1. "Dude why aren't you going to the gym with me? You know we both need to lose weight and I am actually concerned with my diet." Later that night, the guy goes out to dinner with his friends at In-N-Out and orders two double-doubles with animal-style French fries.

2. The young man set a trap to take revenge on his sister by setting up a paint bucket on top of the door and as soon as it would open, the paint would fall all over his sister. But as soon as he was finished setting up, he left and the door was closed, and he just realized that he had left his cell phone in the bedroom. So he opened the door before even thinking that the paint would fall all over him and was very mad at himself.

Both of these examples consist of irony because the results of the two events happened to be unexpected.

Responses:

1. I liked Jacob's examples about Susan Boyle's appearance on "Britain's Got Talent". I think his example clearly explains what Irony means and how it is used.

This grammar girl was video taped instead of being on audio. It had a clip of Palin talking at a pardoning turkey event, while a turkey was being slaughtered directly behind her. It was ironic since she was at the event to pardon a turkey, but we see the complete opposite happening.

Examples:
I remember reading a story about a girl who happened to listen to a conversation between two murderers. They were planning on killing someone in the town. So she notified the sheriff, and everyone she knew. What was ironic was that the death they were planning was actually hers, and that never went through her brain.

Something else that would be ironic would be if someone set a trap for someone else, but ended up "trapping" themselves. Let's say I wanted to play a prank on Bob. I wanted to shock him, so I take out a pen that shocks you (really isn't a pen), and place it next to my notebook. Hoping he would ask for it, since he usually does. As class goes on he asks to borrow a pen and I give him the one I'm actually using, and pick up the one beside my notebook completely forgetting that it is a shocker not an actual pen. SO, instead of him getting shocked I do, but the prank was meant to be on him.

This video explains how Sarah Palin goes to pardon a turkey when they in fact end up seeing the slaughtering of one. She goes on to explain how the actually pardoning of the turkey could be ironic to Palin because she is known as an avid hunter.

Examples:
1.) The very religious girl got into a brutal fight today. (This is ironic because you wouldn't expect a religious girl to fight.)

2.) Justin, the worse kid in the class, got an A on his essay when everyone else got an F.

Irony is the exact opposite of what you would think would happen. It is unexpected or unbelievable. In this podcast we hear about Sarah Palin pardoning a turkey but we see a slaughter going on in the background.
The place and expectations are the main things that make something ironic.

ex:If you were spending half of your life making fire extinguishers, and then you died in a fire because you didn't have a fire extinguisher.

ex: Another example of irony would be if someone could ride a motor bike but not a bicycle.

I agree with Navpreet because the place and expectation do play a big role in irony.
