Episode 27 of Grammar Girl is about how to use colons. Grammar explains that a colon is used to signal that what comes after it is directly related to the what came before it. Also, any statement before a colon must always be a complete sentence. She also tells us that the first word of the second statement needs no capitalization, unless it begins with a proper noun.

Ex.
That's what he does everyday after school: takes a nap.

It's correct, because "That's what he does everyday after school" is a complete sentence alone.

Summary
From what I learned in this episode of Grammar Girl is that when using a colon, the sentence or phrase coming after must be related to the sentence before the colon. Usually colons are used when listing things, like how Grammar Girl used an example. Also the first word coming after the colon doesn't necessarily have to be capitalized.

Example
Before going to school I make sure of these things: have my phone, iPod, key, homework, and any other necessary material.

Response
@snot1r;
I liked how you kept your summary brief and didn't leave out any of the important points of the episode. Good Job.

In episode # 27 Grammar Girl explains how to use the colons correctly and when to use them. She says only use it when statement is complete sentence by itself. She also tells us that a quick to check whether a colon is correct, you should replace it with the word namely and do not capitalize the first word after a colon.

Example

There are two things he likes to do : texting and listing to his iPod.

Response

Edwin used good example to explain how to use the colons and its easy to understand.

Episode 27 of Grammar Girl describes how and when to use colons. Colons are followed by an elaboration or separation of groups referring to different things. All acknowledgments made before colons must be complete sentences. She also explains how the rules are the same whether you're writing a list or a sentence.

Ex. When I leave home, I must always have 4 things: my wallet, purse, phone, and keys.

It is correct because the statement before the colon was a complete statement and the statement following the colon was being listed.

@Edwin
I agree with how you combined everything that Grammar Girl went over into your statement. Wonderful effort.

Grammar girl for today talks about using "colons", the mark of expectation or addition. The colon signals that what comes next is directly related to the previous sentence.Colons shall be used after statements that are complete sentences. What you use after the colons shall expand on the sentence before it. One thing I thought was a very interesting is Grammar girls testing method. She said to use the word "namely" after the colons an see if it sounds right. If it does then its right if it doesn't then you have a problem.

Ex.1 (USED CORRECTLY)
When I wrote about my break I said " There many things in my life that interest me most: cars , clothes, education and females".

Ex.2 (used incorrectly)
When I did my rough draft an I was explaining my trip to Chicago. i said "MY brother has many items he would like to out on his car,rims,music,head lights,tail lights and much more". I should have out a colon after car because Im starting a list an just that sentence by itself if complete an if i say namely after it would make since.

i like how aaylon briefly describe an example of using the things she needs before she leaves home. She hit the nail on the head with that example an she didnt have to write a huge paragraph.

Summary
This episode of Grammar Girl explains how to use colons correctly in sentences or lists. You place the colon right after a complete sentence to either further explain the original statement, or expand on it. She tells us that capitalization is not always necessary.

Example
I have the same routine everyday when I get home from school: take my shoes off, walk my dog, eat, and begin on homework.

Response
Ryan- I like how you used two examples to show us the correct and incorrect way of using a colon.

In this episode of Grammar Girl we learn how to use colons correctly. She explains how a colon must come after a complete sentence, and it must be used to expand on the previous sentence. She also explains how capitalization after a colon is completely based on style, yet the word that comes after a colon is normally not capitalized, unless its a proper noun. You can also check if you used a colon correctly by replacing it with the word "namely".

Example:
there a two musical instruments I like to play the most: the trumpet and trombone.

Response:
I think that Anissa gave a great example of how to use a colon correctly.
