The topic was about active voice versus passive voice. In active voice sentences are when a subject is doing an action. A passive voice the action becomes the subject.Passive sentences aren't wrong they just sometimes don't have action in them.

Most people are very proactive.-vocabulary 1

This Lesson was about Active voice verses passive voice. Active voice is when the subject of a sentence is doing the action: "Bob eats pie." In passive voice the action is promoted to the subject: "Pie is eaten by Bob". Passive voice seems to go in circles and is less direct than active voice.

Its not that Passive does not have an action, its just that the action gets promoted to the subject.

Summary
On today's episode of Grammar Girl, Grammar Girl talked about the topic of passive voice versus active voice and its differences. When speaking or writing in a passive voice, you must use the action word as a subject. Also I learned that politicians usually use the passive voice.(that's how you know they cannot be trusted). Now for the active voice, you use the subject word or place it in front of the action word. So now it acts as an action rather than receiving the action. It gives and not receives.

ExamplePassive voice: The computer is being used by me
Active voice: I am using the computer

Response
@Mike: Nice way of using the examples, you put in a neat and understandable way. Except it should be under the example category and not in your summary.

Episode 46 of Grammar Girl explains how the active voice is a better way getting your point across than the passive voice. The active voice is simply a sentence where the subject is doing the action. In a passive voice the subject is the object that is receiving the action.

For example:
"He kicked the ball" is in the active voice because "He" is doing the action. In the passive voice:
"The ball was kicked by him" changes subject to "The ball" and adds a little bit of mystery.

Response:

Dear Taryn and Mike,
The action of a sentence cannot be its subject. In the passive voice, the recipient of the action (object) becomes the subject.

In episode # 46 grammar girl is talking about active voice and passive voice. In active voice subject doing the action. In passive voice we do not know who is doing the action. People often use passive voice when they don't know who is doing the action. Passive voice sentences are not incorrect. In passive voice action gets promoted instead of subject.

For example

Active voice: Amy wrote a letter.

Passive voice: A letter was written by Amy.

Response: Paul used good examples to explain the difference between active and passive voice. Both sentences are correct, but in active voice "He",the subject is getting promoted.

Summary
In our society today, many people struggle with avoiding the use of a passive voice. When speaking with an active voice, the subject is doing the action. In a passive voice, the target of the action becomes the main sujbect. Passive sentences are not incorrect, although it is a difficult way to phrase one's thoughts. At times, when speaking in a passive voice, may be awkward, or simply vague. When using a active voice, one may write more effectively.

Example
Shark Lab from Marine Biology.
"The shark preys on the smaller fish."

The skark is the subject, where the fish is the reciever of the action.

Response
Edwin's example is very clear. This is because he illustrates the difference between the two voices with similar ideas.

Today's Grammar Girl taught us the difference between active and passive voices. Active voices have the subject is doing the action, for example.
He went downstairs.
While a passive voice the action becomes the subject,
for example.
The stairs he went down.

Taryn's Comment was well done, but very brief.

SUMMARY
In this Grammar Girl we are introduced to Passive Voice and Active Voice. In active voice the subject is the one taking the action. In passive voice the subject is the target of the person taking the action.

Active Voice:
John eats his food.

Passive Voice:
The food is eaten by John.

RESPONSE
I like how s.tarjit stated "Passive voice sentences are not incorrect." because the illusion of passive voice sentences may be a bit tricky to understand.

I agree with Mike but it is true that in passive sentences the action is left out.

Summary:
In this lesson we learned about the differences between active voice and passive voice. Active voice is when there is a subject in a sentence and they are doing an action. Passive voice sentences usually have the action as the subject.

Example:
Active voice
"Her boyfriend broke up with her..." vocab1 Her boyfriend is the subject and the action is breaking up with her. She is receiving that action.

Response:
Edwin, good job showing examples of the same sentences in active and passive voice.
